Jomm TYLER SALT CO., Maginaw City Mich THE GROCERS' GALL. They Make a Grand Kick on Some of the Wholesalers And Organize a Proteotive Asso- clation for Various Purposes. About thirty retail grocers of this city, met at (iladstone's grocery store, on Douglas street las* evening, for the purpose of organizing a Retail Gre- cers’ association. E. E. French was elected chairman and J. I Nichol sec- retary. Mr. Gladstone stated that one of the objects of the meeting was to take steps to stop wholesale dealers | and commission merchants from sell- ing direct to hotels. This could lte done by agreeing not to purchase any goods from any wholesale dealer cr commission merchant who does busi- ness in that way. Mr. Robert Easson, representing the wholesale house of Paxton & Gallagher, introduced the following rosolution: Resolved, That we, the retail gro- cers of Omaha, will not purchase any goods from any wholesale dealers or commission men who sell to any one uot in the grocery trade, This in- ciudes the trade of the atate as well as of the city of Omaha, This resolution was carried. In behalf of Paxton & Gallagher, Mr. Esson said that the would guar- autee that his firm would abide by the resolution and he said that he thought every other wholesale house would do it, as the wholesalers wanted the trade of the retailers of this city. He also thought the commission men would follow su.t. Some discussion followed, after which it was moved and carried that mmittee of seven be appointed to upsn the wholesale men and com- on merchants and inform them of the action of this meeting. The chair appointed committee: McShane, Dorman, Gen- leman, McVittie, Spetman and Glad- stone. Mr. Easson thought the retailers ought to protect themselves in other ways. He referred to the habit of cutting prices in cert goods and under certain circumstances. He suggested thut some one man ought to have the power vested in him to say what certain goods shall be sold for on a certain day, the idea being to sell goods at a uniform rate. Mr, Nichol thought that the re- tailers should form a protective union. T. A. McShane moved that the temporary organization be made per- manent. Mr. Gladstone thought the matter should be postponed until all the gro- cers were prrsent. Mr. McShane's motion was carried. Mr. Easton moved that the name of the organization be ‘‘The Retail Grocers' Protective Association,” Mr. French suggested that a com- mittee be Appmnt: w draw up a con- stitution and b; Mr, McShane -ugzuud that there be an initiation fee to pay expense of hall, ete, Oh motion the ohair n%pomud "o Measrs, Sander, Madsen and Bolin to make arrangements for securing a place for meetings. Mr. Easson suggested that the mat- | ¥ ter of credits be taken up, aud that grocers report to each other the stand- ing of cnstomers who obtain credit from place to place.
