Plenty c¢f Bueiness, Good Business Men and Prosperity Generally, Warxor, Ia, May 30 —Walnut is almost in the extreme northeastern corner of Pattawattamie county, on the main line of the Rock Island rail- road, and has been built entirely since the advent of that road. There 18 a large German element in the surround- ing country, and in the town many of the best business men are of the same nationality. THE LOCATION of the town has some peouliatly pleas ant features. The railroad passes along the valley of Walnut creek, here on- ly a small stream, in a beautiful val- ley. The clean farms and tidy farm houses, the regular fences and herds of cattle, the groves of forest trees, well tilled fields, and the luxuriant grass of these Iowa valleys and gently sloping hillsides, bespeak a thritty and wealthy farming community, and add a native elegince and variation to the picture, as we look upon this young prairie village. To the northwest from the railroad, on the bluffs, and stretch- ing for a mile away is the city, on three evenly rounded ridges, which are separated by gently graded val- leye, running at right angles with the railrond. The principal business houses, of which brick is fast taking the place of the old wooden structures, are mostly collected near the station. The stranger is struck with the natu- ral grade, perfect drainage, lack of gutters and deep cuts, the smoothness and rotundity of all the elevations, and especially the main street, which i8 wide, supplied with good sidewalks and_ crosswalks, smooth and evenly graded, and ascends to the northern and residence part of the city by a well and gvenly rounded curve that was provided by nature. The twelve years of constant prosperity and con- tinued improyement since this prairie bluff' assumed the title of a village, has planted several good churches on the higher ground, a grand school house with a tull corps of competent teachers, elegant residences on nearly all the elevations, and developed its wide main street into a beautiful broadway, teeming with business at one end and at the other adorned with comfortable and costly homes. surtounded with neat fencer, large trees, regular waiks, shaven lawns, the fabled Pheenix, tlat was said to return to life from its own ashes, he is at the front, and is becoming much attached to Omaha wholesale houses with which he is dealiug largely. AVERY, SPANGLER & (0., is another energetic firiy, dealing in erain, coal, farm implements, etc., with several large sieam elevators along this road, and doing a heavy business; and Mr. Spaigler recogniz- ed in your commissioner, a fellow student in the northwestern state normal school, of the Keystone state, in the days when Prof. S. R Thom. paon, of the Nobraska university and of his broken health, has taken up his office just opposite the bauk, and resumen the practice of law very re- luctantly, and your correspondent would acknowledge favors received by his kindness. J. ¥ STOWE came to this place a few years ago from Atlantic, without means, but tull of “*pluck and hard days works,” and to-day lie is carrying a good stock of jewelry, watches, clocks, “fiddles and musical toggery” and is one of the enterprising successful business men of the place, while P. Casey, the veteran ment vendar, takes the Dairy AND WeEkLY BEE, 80 as to be sure and get all there is in it; and talks of taking two copies of the Daily so as to have a reserve after the first is carried away by some mneighboring reader anxious for news. THE WEEKLY BEE is found in all this part of the state, and one or two hundred copies are de- livered from this oftice. It would be impossiblo to notice all the items of interest, and the great atores and trading houses and shops in this letter, but the CENTRAL WOUSK and its busy crowd must not be over- looked. Joe Gump, the gonial man- ager, has been fitting up the house, and extended his room to keep up with the demand, and we were a little surprised to seo such crowded tablos and full office over Sunday, The diummers, the land seckers, the parties roturned from the New Mex- ico mining camps, and the insurance men in crowds were here. We no- ticed among others J. J. Bolin, of the Bluffs, who gave some scnsible sug- gestions during the labor trouble this spring, and 3 C. M. Among the prominent busi- ness houses we will notice the EXCHANGE BANK. This institution is located on the cor- ner, in the business center, in a large and beautiful two-story brick that stands out on the bluff as a watch tower, around which the business in- torest of the young city might rally for a sure protection. The second floor is used as a lodge room for the 0dd Fellows and United Workmen, The basement is used for various offices and shops, while the first floor has a barber shop, insurance and sew- ing machine office, besides the large portion used by the owners for their heavy banking andcollection business, Mr. J. H. Henry, the controlling spirit and prerident, for some years divided his time between Chicago and Walnut, being largely engaged in the grain trade, But within the past year or two he concluded to locate here, and at once began to invest his money for the bulding up of the place, and is doing a general banking business. THE WALNUT NEWS, is a spicy, independent paper, kindly accepted by all the people and well patronized as it deserves, Its young editor, Mr. Don Cramer, is a versatile and pointed writer, a practical, quiet, business man, who has won an cnvi- able reputation among quill drivers, as a brilliant wit, is highly respected and honored by everybody in the town, and is, with al, a genial and cultivated gentleman, born in the greenmountain etate and educated in the great west. A. B, SLATER is another of our Ber tamily, Wor ten years Mr, Slater carried on the real estate business here, and two months ago he opened a mammoth store of general merchandise that is a great credit to this, or any other city, along the Rock Island road, and still continues the land business, which has been no swall matter during the last year. Mr. Franklin is in the employ of the State insurance company and is a successful agent. alnut is a pleasant, or rather a beautitul, town, with all the conven- iences and business |dnnu§u for a good home, and every few days some stranger locates here to build his for- tune in this prosperous young city of 800 inhabitants at the head of Walnut creek, on the divide between tho East and West Nishnabotany, and by rail fifty miles from Omaha.
