Ohloago Times Spocis] Sr. Lovrs, May 28, — Belleville, IIL, will have a funeral instead of a fete to-morrow, (ireat preparations had been made for the picnic of the Ger- man Methodiat Suuday school, and to- morrow it was to be held in a grove about a mile from the town. At the worvices to-day the minds of the younger members of the cohgrogation were upon the anticipated pleasure rather han tho worship. At the close of the Sunday school in the afternoon, about 4 o’clock, half a dczsn of the young men strolled out to the grove to look at the booths and tables and swings, which had been put up on Saturday, One of the party was Philip Matthews, He was recognized a8 connected with the Sunday schools although he had of late been dissipat- ed, Matthews had been keeping com- pany with Miss Annie Geyer for $wo yoars and they had been engaged to be married. She, howevor, had taken offenso at her lover's erratic ways and had dismissed him about three weeks ago. The young man had not been on the pienic-ground long whon Miss Geyer and three other young ladies arrived. As soon as sho saw that he was there she tried to avoid him, and sat down at somo distance from whero he was, in company with the girls who wore with her, ~ After a few mo- ments young Matthews wont over to where she was, and taking her by the arm compolled her to step aside with him, and began talking to her. The others could not hear what was eaid, THE DA ILY BEE--THU&SDAY JUNE 1 1882, of two aheets of paper pusted together. The inferior grades are three.ply. The prices range from 81 50 to $12 per dozen packs, while forty years ago the inge was from fifty cents to 83 per zen. The improvement has been constant and steady, so that the third qrade of cards now are as good as the best were thirly years ago. The b st goods are handled thirty times after the paper is made before they are com- pleted and ready for market, As to the domand, I do not suppuse there are any more cards made now than thero were thirty years ago. But one pack now will last as long as a dozen would that were made then. Up to twenty yoars ago wo used hand-presees, printed lees than a pack at a time, and had to make as many impressions as thera were colors on the cards.” ‘“‘How about the manufacture ot marked cards, such as gamblers some- times uee?’ “‘Those cards are generally marked by the gamb'ers themselves. Some- times they make them by cutting up cards and pasting them together in a peculiar way. No reputable card manufacturer will manufacturemarked cards or have anything to do with them. The gamblers who use marked cards used to resort to the scheme of gotting the regular marufacturers to print the face of the cards, leaving the backs white, and they would get the backs printed and marked some- where else. Now, no reputable man- ufacturer will do that even. I have not printed a white-back card for any body for twenty years. 'There are though, I believe, one or two places in Now York where they are manufao- but presently they heard Miss Geyer scream, and on looking toward where the two were standing they saw that Matthows had DRAWN A REVOLVER, and was pointing it directly ai her heart. Before any of them could re- cover from the horror that had seized upon them young Matthews had thrown the revolver down on the ground. Two of the young men then washed away by Wednes iny night's ruin, of last weck, His loss is estimated at $500, and will be a severe blow.
