Gerwan Languas® The Sickening Deads Wit nessed by the First Iowa Cavalry, A Train-Load of Wonnded Union Soldiers Shot in a Row. 7o the Editor of Tus Ban: Perhaps too much has already been said in the publio prints regadring the out-law and cut-throat Jesse James. Being an old soldier —enlisting from the noble state of Towa, and, having been identified since ¢hat time with that state, and more recently with Wyoming territory, you will, I trust, indulge me a amall space in your ex< cellent paper to give a" *‘party bless. ing” to that villain of all villains, whese sudden death has been so senti- mentally deplored, because, perchance, the deed was not'done “‘legally,” eto. T know' something, Mr. Editor, of this ‘‘butcher.” I do not spoak as one who has sat in an easy chair with slippers on his feet, and, while enjoying a good cigar, read over the history of his ‘‘takiny off.” Oh, no! My own membry o the past is my prompter and the hand that writes, the same ones that have helped to gather up the spattered remains of many & many whom he and his gang have murdered. As I recall the scenes of years ago in con- nection with this notoriqus character —the record ef ‘Sepoys” in the Crimean war, and the more recent slaughters on the plains of our own country, are, as compared with Jesse James and his work, ‘‘tender mer- cies,” In 1864 my Company “L" of the First Towa Cavalry were atationed at Mexico, Mo., and, the massacre was at Contralia, Mo. James came and 1 went like a pestilence. Men were not only brutally murdered, but while yot life existed, wero cut slowly into pieces. First an arm, then a leg or foot were slowly dissevered from the body. He would shoot a man and then stand by his side and discharge the entire contents of his revolver in bis head. Then strip them of all valuables. At one massacre his gang sent to untimely graves 1568, all Union soldiers returning from At- lanta, Ga.—seven of my own regiment sharing in this bitter but unequal struggle—victims alike with those whom they strove to defend. At about this time, myself, with others of our company, were detailed togo te Concord, Mo. This bloodthirsty fiend had preceeded us only by one Mies Honry chose as her theme *The Marble Waitoth;" Miss Lufkin spoke on “Fetes,” while Mr. Goodell took as his theme, “The Alabama and the Geneva Arbitration.” This last was in marked contrast with the usually solected for commencement addresses. All the addresses were woll propared. Mr. C. P, Ring, of the school board, made a ghort ad- dress on “‘Our School Days and the Changes Wrought.” The opora house was fairly filled, but wonld have been jammed to overflowing but for the threatening state of the weather, The people of Glenwood are justly prond of their schools, There are three school buildings and ten teach- ers are employed, *I'he board has not favored the plan of continual chavge in the corps of teachers, but having once secured good teachers, they are rotatned year after year, We opine that in the near future the éourse o study of the high school will be ex- tended so that pupils graduating Kere may take advanced standing at any of our colleginte institutions if they be minded to go abrend. There is very little biilding being done this season thus far, in fact, theme day, but what a day--a train was captured and disabled. Loaded with sick and returned sol- diers on their way home after three years of service, these veterans were ordered out of the cars, made to form in line on the xmmisn that, doing thus, they would be fairly treated. Disarmhed, there they stood, some so sick as to be unable to stand except by the aid of those stronger, poorly clad, but “homeward bound,” and in spite of all their misery, sickness and emaciation, happy because so near to those they loved, and from whom they had so long been separated. They formed “‘in line,” for wigat—only to be shot down one by one until not a man was left, Many things done on that “awful day” never was and never will be printed, because unfit for anyone to read. It was said, by those who lived long enough to reveal the fact, that as they stood in one long row, a test was made to'see how many could be shot at one discharge of their guns. By stanlling at the head of the line and shooting on level with the heads, these ‘‘devils” found that one of their heavy calibre guns: penetrated sewen heads, Does it seem possible, my dear reader, that such beings have a heart or soul? The bloody work was soon done. The train, loaded with s0 many valuable lives, stands empty, and the ground on either side lies covered with the lifeleas forms of father, son, brother and lover, whose only crime was that they were Union soldiers, and whose gre:ten enemy they so unfortunately met, T might go and speak of the almost numberless cases ‘wherem ' this fiend incarnate wrought his bloody deeds, but my blood eurdles as I write, and 80 I refrain from further detail of this fearful being. Now, Mr. Editor, allow me to ask, who are they and of what material made, that criticise the manner of taking the life of James? Did they wish others yet to fall by his hand? Some one must do the deed, and who more fit than the Ford brothers? If deceit was ever justifiable, if & reward for such duplicity as they racticed was ever warranted, it was in that case, All honor fo the governor of Mis- souri for the courage displayed by him ~—for no man could do as he did who was a coward, And while the ' state loses a few thousand' dollars, they gain a renewed sense of peace and se- ourity. The ‘“‘pest” of that state and the west is removed, and peaceablo and law-abiding citizens can move about more at ease, sleep more ' tran- quilly, and safely know that the worst being ever born of woman has gone to his grace, and to a just God, who will, we trust, render "unto him the same meroy he dealt out to others. soldiers who know the facts stated above, and who were nearer the scene of terror than the writer: Nicholas Morris, Andrew Miller, Lucas Man- warren, Lioutenant Dillon, Adell; John Jammison, Anamosa, and W, Smith, Cedar Rapids, all of Towa. The * difficulties concerning the ‘‘Towa school for the feeble minded” at Glenwoon seem to be settled, Drl Archibald having deeded to the state the land that is in dispute, and turned over the institution to the charge of Dr. Powell, who was duly installed as superintendent on Wednesday, 24th inst. Concerning the merits™ of the case we will not speak, but may ea; ;hnp the public service has suffere Y it. The temperance people of Mills county are not idle. Organizations have been made, and a thorough and systematic canvass of the county is 1h progress. Mr. Frank Shinn, of Em- erson, spoke on Thursday night at Pacific Junction, He is an earnest and efflcient worker in this cause. Rev. Dr. Todd, pestor of the Con- gregational church in Tabor, and Rev. James Lisle of the Methodist church in Glenwood, exchange pulpits for to- morrow. Considerablé preparations are being mado in the Méthodist Sun- day school for an appropriate celebra- tion of ‘‘children’s day” the second Sabbath in June, There has been some talk of & 4th of July celebra- tion, but nothing done as yet. { » OBSERVER: No Matter What Happens, You miy rest assured that you are safe in | ein peedily eured by THOMAY' ELkCTRIC u all cases of rheumatism, nieuralgia, toothache, etc. Oue trial cnly is necessary to prove its efficacy. S—— FROM FREMONT. How the Gallant Msajor is Sized Up in that County. Fremoxnt County, May 25, 1882. To the Editor of Tus Bxs. I see by The Nonpareil of Council Bluffs and several other papers in southwest Towa, that they hold out the idea that a geperal tidel wave is sweeping over this congressional dis- trict in favor of A. R. Aunderson for congress, Now the question arises, is he the proper man for that pofition, Newsapapere, like himseli, may have personal motives in view in attempt- ing to creata a boom in his favor, hence their testimony may not be 80 reliable as the testimony of soma others whose motives are personal and whose long acquaintance with Mr, Anderson lieth = personally, and officially them to f‘udge more correct- ly. In the first place, if there is any boom for him, it never started in Fremont county, In the second place we do not *hink it started, if at all, among the unprejudiced citizens of the district, who have no other desire than that the best man in the district should fill the place, In the third lphca. we do think it started, if at all, among that class of unpreju- diced minds who have had the oppor- tunity to kuow his private and public life in the past, lmfhi. previous offi- cial actions, Mr, Andersen possesses some good qualities, Nature has done more for him than he has for himself. He has a fair record as & soldier. Although he has done more to defeat republican nominees than any other man in Fre- mont county, he has apparently, at least, been s staunch republican. He is & good political organizer. To off- set thie, he has been & chronic office- seeker, being either in office or trying to get in, and frequently both atonce, for nearly twenty years, As long as @ can use an individual or the public to aid him in selfish purposes, he is their friend. When tgll ceases he is their enemy, His course though life has lacked very materially in high moral principle and keen sense of jus- tice and right, If his object can be obtained through the better class of {zeolplu. he prefers it. If not, he will- ngly discards them, and accepts sup- port from almost any source, That he has been a willing assistant of railroads i lowa is proverbial wherever he is known, and in fact, | have never heard that he ever denied any imputations of that fact, and if he did, I think his raileoad passes will rise in judgment against him., His whole ambition, from his youth to the Plain, Medleated, Douch, Shower, It petent wale and fem always on hand, tlon given patrons, batning childron, solicited DR, A.
