Wi have alvays contended that crucuses wnd couventions ought to be cone ducted with as much fairness and de- ‘corum as tho election of a_ presiding elder, a bishop or a president of a synod. The republican party is not made up of fools or dois, and any man worthy of their support need not treat them as such. When cau- cuses and conventions are manipula: ted by a few, who have only personal motives in view, in such a way as to prevent an honest and fair ex- pression, it always seems to us an acknowledgement of their unworthiness, and fear that it cannot be hidden unless extra exertions are used to overcome that unworthiness by unfairness, trickery and imposition on the people. This is the opening one of the meet- ings of the Council Bluffs Driving Park association. The purses offered aro liberal, and the entries are such as warrant the public in expecting some some rare sport. The enterprise of the associatien merits & hearty support, and the entertainment promised is deserving of large crowds to witness the showing of speed. The races on the proj me to-day are those ef the 3:00 and 2:27 classes. There was some little stir yesterday caused by the sudden and mysterious disappearance of two speed horses. The sheriff attached them and placed them in a stable, from which they were taken Sunday night, and itis said shipped west. The - Driving Park association has lgpointed a committeo to look after the newspaper men who attend the races, and to see that due ocourtesies and hospitalities are extended such visitors, Said committee consists of O. U, Best, of Tue Beg; J. C. Mor- gan, of the Globe, and H. N. McGrow, of the Nonpareil. CARPETS. Another lot of Carpets in choice atterns, just received, by Harkness, routt & Co. ) UNCLE SAM’S BUILDING. There is No Need of Destroying the ‘Work on Account of a Lack of Legislatioh. It has been stated that the work on the United States building here can not be begun in any event until the state legislature meets and releases the state's jurisdiction over the land upon which the building is to be lo- oated. This has been given as the edi- torial opinion of J. ©. Morgan, who has announced that nothing can be done until the legislature meets, which will not be until January 1884, unless a speeial session is call. Now the fact is that the legislature at the last session passed a bill giving the United States the jurisdiction it re- quires over any piece of ground which may be purchased here for the loca- tion of a government building. Mr. Morgan was s represontative from this oity, and yet this’ bill seems to have passed without his knowing anything about it. He ought to have noticed more closely the proceedings of the body of which he was a member, es- pecially when ' such ‘proceedings di- mtl{ affected this ci¥y’s interests. The bill was drawn by Scnator Wright and introduced by him, and went fly- ing through without opposition, which may account in part for the fact that Mr. Morgan, though a momber, did not notice it, The scare about there being a long delay because of the lack of such ‘legislation is therefore mero foolishness. The state has consented to relinquish its jurisdiction, and Un- cle Sam has full sway to pick outa location and go ahead as fast as he chooses. ity of the committee were led to be- liove that the calling of the conven- tion at #0 early a date was the wish of all tho candidates, and with that be- lief they signed the call; when in fact only one candidate wanteq it so soon, and the whole project was at his in- stance and according to his plnnn\ng; fearing that time, reflection and sub- sequent reflection might work disas- trously to their chances for congress- ional honors, 700 BUSHELS Choice White Oats for sale cheap. Mayne & Co., 34 Pearl street. The Prohibition Amendment—A Chal- lenge from Alex Obert. To the Editor of The Bee: 1 find that the temperance folks are making a great deal of fuss over the pro- hibition amendment, that is to be voted for :nr against on the 27th day of June next. Now, f they are so sanguine and sure that if the ndment is carried that it will stop the sale and_consumption of in- toxrcating liquors in the state of Iowa, let any one of them put one hundred dollars in the First National Bank of Council Bluffs, Towa, and I will then do the same; let both sums remain in the bank for one year on interest, If the amendment does prohibit the use of intoxicating liquors in the state, then my hundred dollars and in- terest goes to the person who puts up his one hundred dollars. But if the amend- ment does not stop the use of intoxicating liquors, then I will be entitled to that per- son’s hund, dollars and interest. I further say and defy any of eo-called temperance folks to show me or any other citizen what benefit the labor or farmer or any one else will have by the enacting of said amendment, On the contrary, it is not the means of taking from the tarmer from fourteen to twenty cents per bushel on corn and wheat because he will be forced to hip his grain out of the state, and give the laborers in other states em- pl?mani in, manufacturing this grain; and then thay will have to pay the rail- road companies freight to bring back this manufactured grain, Iwould ask these same people again whether they have a right to dictate to me or any other free-born American citizen what he shall eat or what he shall drink, or where withal shall he be clothed? If they have this right is not that slavery in its worst form? Isnot that the reason that our forefathers left the mother conn- try and fought and conquered in the revo- lutionary war? Was it not for the pur- pose of throwing off the yoke go that they might do as seemed to them best, accord- ing to the dictates of their own consciences and not #s a tyrannical ruler or set of rulers would have them to do? The late war thrugh which we passed was wazed Lo wipe off from our escatcheon the one great stain that soiled it, viz: slavery. . Now, in this enlightened age do our temperance brethren wish to impose upon us: the, rnko which fell from the necks of four million human_beings at the close of the war? Do they also wish to throw out of employment ousarids of Iaborers and ‘mechanics, and turn the tide of immigea- tion from, instead of toward our state, and to depreciate the value of property instead of increasing it Now, good temperance folke, arise and give us some sound, common sense, inste. of appealing to the sentimental side of hu- man nature, and not mislead the farmers, Iaborers and mechanics by a fallacy. Will you have our state increase both in wealth and population, er like unto our sister state, Kansas, under the regime of Giov. St. John, decrease in wealth, popula- tion and in the intellectual capabilities of the reople? Yoursrespectfully, maySm8t ALEX OBBRT, GOUNCIL BLUFFS SPEGIAL NOTICES.
