Keau Harris Returned vo Answer the Charge of Murder. Constable Edgerton roturned yos- terday morning from Denver, where he went to secure the person of Esau Harris, the man who ditched the Union Pacific freight train at Shelton, Nebraska, soveral months ago. Edgerton returned with his prison- er to Kearney Tuesday night at mid- night, and Harris was taken before the county judge on Wednesday, when a new complaint was filed, and the preliminary examination set for yos- torday. The charge was ‘‘obstruct ing a railroad track and murder.” It will be remembered that the fireman of the train was killed, the engineer 000 | g0 badly scalded that he has been comparatively useless ever since, a brakeman was badly hurt, and seven cars of cattle were ditched. J. 8. Shropshire ropresented the Union Pacific railway and the state, and Mr, Calkins, a Kearney attorney, the defense. The case was worked up %Dr. Ayer, of Kearney, and Arthur Wood, of the Pinkerton detective agency, Chieago. The prisoner is said to be one of those silont, ignorant and cunning men, who know just enough to keep 000 | their mouths shut, and all he says is that he knows nothing about the affair. He has fifteen witnesses subpoensed and the state about a half a dozen, On the way in one man, at North Platte, told Constable Edgerton that if he would only leave his' prisoner there half an hour they would settle the whole matter for him, and there is no doubt but he meant whathe said. A Money Drawer Robbed at |[Mid-day -—~Escape of the Thieves. The firm of Dwyer & Poland, flour and feed store, whose place of busi- ness is on Dodge streot, near Fifteenth, was victimized yesterday to the ex- tent of thirty-five dollars by a shrewd thief and his confederate. About noon a tall, lank individual went into the storo and inquired of Mr. Dwyer if the firm kept hay to sell, Upon receiving an afllrmative answer he followed the proprietor to the rear of the store and was shown the stock of horse feed. He declared that he was looking for timothy hay and was told that it was not to be found in the country and that the wild hay was about the best to be had. He then made inquiries as to the supply of corn, and afterwards of bran, and at lenudl, having exhausted 5| the subject of feed in general, he fol- lowed Mr, Dwyer back to the front of the store. In the meantime an expressman had come in for some feed, and, being told to hel himself, weighed what he wanted. hen proprietor came to the front he handed him a bill out of which to take the change, Mr. Dwyer stepped to the cabinet desk in which the money drawer was situated but en starting to open it with his key found that he had been antici- pated, The drawer had been opened with a “‘jimmy” and the coutents, about 'dli in cash were gone. On looking about, it was discovered that the hfl seoker after timothy hay was gone also, and the size uf his game was soon measured up. The fellow had had & contederate, and the loca- tion of the money drawer being as- certained, had drawn Mr. Dwyer off to the rear of the store on a b while his confederate tapped the till, It was a bold game, but a successful one, and the perpetrators made their escape with the booty in the shape of tender. Mr. D says he would know the thief if he saw him, but the improbability of see- ing him is the hiteh, MAENNERCHOR MIRTH MAKERS- A Lively Terpsichorean Entertain- ment at Poppleton Hall.
