Meeoting in Kessler's Hall of the Team- sters Last Evening, at Which They Resolve Upon $3.60 a Day. The cold winds which swep! with vorg 'ul gusts over the city all of yesterday, oaused the few teams and men at work on the B, & M. dump to suspend operations. Comparatively slow progress is being made in the work, and it is probable that some- thing will have to bo done in the line of engaging laborers. When steps are taken in this direction, it is also pretty certain that each man will have to be paid $1.76 a day, as nearly two- thirds of the men who have stood out for that figure have already secured johs, and by the latter part of nex week it is probable that all will be employed, Several contractors in the oity have announced their determina- tion of only taking work upon the basis of advanced wages for laborers, THE TEAMSTERS, At a meeting of the teamsters last evening, & permauent organization was purfected for the purpose of maintaining a living rate of wages for themeelves and the animals under their charge Mr. M. J. Melia was elected presi- dent, aud Mr. Thos. Stewart secre- tary. Every member pledged himself to work no tesn for less than $3 60 par day. All the members of the organi- ztion were men who were employed under the protection of the bayonets of Camp Dump. They were en- thusiastic on the propusition of an orgm ization, and were resolved tu stand by each other to the last. A committes w appointed for printing pu p ses, and another meet- ing agreed upon for this evening ac Kessler's hall, to which all teamsters are invited. EX MAYOR VAUGHAN'S CONTRIBUTION. Mayor Vaughan, of Council Bluffs, was invited by the president of the Luborer's Proteotive union to attend the funeral of George Arm- strong. In a graceful letter of ac- knowledgement, Mr. Vaughan ex- pressed his regret that he could not be present upon that occasion, and made the g-nerous offor ot a parcel of land in Council Bluffs to the widow of the deceased. This was accep'ed, snd accordingly yesterday President Walsh received from the n~w ex-mayor a warranty decd to Mrs George P. Armatrong of lot 4, in block 26, Bay less’ third addition to the city of Counc:l Blnffs. The deed was pre- sented t» Mrs. Armstrong, who grate- {ully acknowledyed the gift. A band will be procured, and responsea from all over the coun- try of a congratulatory nature will be read. Other important steps towsrda ¢ msolidatiin of the workingmen of Omaha will also be taken. THE DLFENDANT'S PLEA. Mr. Rogers was arrested Monda, b; Officer Bullivan and gave bail m the sum of $200 for his appear- auce on Friday. He filed neveral papers which show that he is the own- er of the lot in which the shouse stands, but not of the house which was built by J. C. Rosenfield, who lensed the lot. The house is leased to Morris Otiman, who it is clsimed, rented the rooms to the girls, Whet or the prosecuting witness will iusist on bringing the case to trial or not is not known. The orthodox Mormon is called a “Siint,” the decided anti- Mormon is a “‘Gentile,” the Gentile who pretends friendship for the Mormon church s s ‘“‘Jack Mormon" and the Mormon who lesns towards independence from the church is an ‘‘apostate.” Of all these classes the most despised is a Jack Mormon, and the epithet ap- plied often brings a blow as quick as our less elegant but plainer 1urults, A “Jack Mormon” among the wen- tiles is ahunned as a leper is in Pales- tine, @ small pox patient in a hotel or a militia man in time of a strike, Any asym- pathy represented for the ‘‘Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints” by outsiders 18 enongh to call down the anger of all Gentile Utah on their heads. It appears that four of the best wholesale houses in Omaha have incurred this blight by a recent act, which they probably as little know the consequences of as a Hidoo would know. It was a serious of- fense evivently, nevertheless, and the Ogden Pilot, u leading Guntile paper of Utah, under the head of ‘“‘Jack Mormons,” relieves its feelings thus: “In the light of recent eveuts, it is presumable that some of them would be wiliing to swear that the late B. Young was a prophet of the Lord and the head of a happy family, and assert their belicf that he did not instigate tle Mountain Meadow massacre o have anything to do with sending apostates to hell across lots. What some of these firms have done is what the public is interested in know- 1. When John Taylor & Co. prepared their petitions to congress in tavor ot letting polygamy alone and rent their lackeys sround - with them for siguatures, they were presented to the sgents of the fureign firms, most of whom refused to sign them. L'he Mormons then appealed to the heuds of the institutious, and it is al- leged that last week oue of the azents received a telegram instructing him to sign the nam.e of four firms to the pulygsmous petitio s, as follows: Tootle, Maul & Co., dry goods, rep- resented by A, C. Smith; Reed, Jones Cu., buots and shoes, represented by J. Beatty, Jr.; Steel, Johuson & Co. aud Milard & Johuson, groceries, represented by J. A, Stevens, all of Omaha, Nebraska. In accordance with the instructions, theagent placed these merchants on the record as,apologists tor pulygamy and it is possible that they will ve greatly favored here- afier by the Mormon retailers. I it not probible that all other buyers, uot Mormons or sympathiz:rs with polygumy, will do business heresfter with wholesale houses, at home or ubroad, which were too honorable to cringe before the Murmon dictator and sigu the begging petition to cou- ress? Let all true men cut out the es of these firms and apply to then the rule, ot non-intercourse. Theyare so anxious for latter-end patronave that they should have it exclusively. Mou, cither in or out of Utah, who would sign a petition in favor ot the polygamous church for the sake of trade, are not the class of wen with whom Amerizan and jatriotio mer- chants of the west wish to deal. Four Omaha tirms have shown themselves to be that class of Jacks."” AL e THE CALDERWOOD CONCERT, Magnificent Array of Talented Ar- tists Who WIill Participate ‘Thereln. — We are glad to note the fact that Omaha is soon to be represented in the east by another pupil who chooses to deveiop and refiue nature's gifts in the ever blooming echool of muses.
