Six miles north of Shenan- doah on this road is the unprotentions village of ESSEX, From Shenandoah it looks like a city resting in the valley behind tho encireling bluffs, with ita beautiful brick union school building, standing in the highest part of the town, peep- ing out over the hills like a beacon of our new civilization, or a stronghold for the defence of American liberty. To the northeast is a strong BETTLEMENT OF SWEDES, and a fair minority of the thrity business men of the village, are of the same nationality, some of them belng among the earliest, and now, the wealthiest dealers, There is a noticeable enterprise about the young cities, seldom seen in the eastern states, an eagerness to start a new enterprise, and venture time and money to supply the domand for all kinds of salable articles, and Essex is no exception. A pork packing establishment has been placed in working order this season, and has already disposed of a fow thousand hogs; a barb- wire fence manu‘actory, doing a successful business, has been forced to surrender to the ‘‘alvance guard” of Washburn, Moen & Co.; a $6,000 creamery is ready for the spring’s work; asteam engine manu- factured here is driving the wood and iron lathes and the emery wheels in a plow and machine shop; a practical miller is turning out a good quality of flour; a new :nd spacious wagon shop is nearly finished; agricultural implements and hardware, dry goods and grocerics, building material and farm hands are in good demand; the newspaper is rly sought after; church and school enterprises are bold and well sustained, and a healthy moral tone is found among the peo- ple. P he importance of the place, .at present, may be seen by the number of BUSINESS HOUSES, We find a bank, five stores of gen- eral merchandise, three each of res- taurants, confectionaries, coal dealers and implement houses; five phisicians, four churches and a lawyer; duplicate elevators, groceries, meat markets, hardwares, drug stores, nursevies, grain and stock firms, blacksmiths, jewelry stores, and barber shops, while the furmture, packing h)use, harness shop, newspaper, mill, hotel, boot and shoe store, shoe shop, tailor, livery, wagon shop, creamery and brick yard are all in the “single en- tries.” MR, C. He is, at present, doing a good business for a half dozen ocean steamship com- panies, furnishing transportation and passage to those who desire to cross the ‘‘great deep,” for there are multi- tudes of our foreign born citizens, who, after locating and establishing themselves in business, purchase tickets and send back to their old homes to bring their friends to this great new world in the west. THE BANK is one of the model institutions, and the silent, retiringly modest proprie- tor, Mr. B. M. Webster, a brother of the latd Hon, W. E. Webster, like all that family, is a banker by birth a8 well as education, and manages his business with great prudence and safety. The bank is located in a fine large two-story brick, and has all the conveniences expocted i such business. MR, G, B, JENNINGS, like W, 8. Palmer, of Riverston, who it is said, would quarrel with himself if ho had time, becauso he is the only lawyer in town, located hero several years ago, unknown to ‘‘fortune and fame,” and, taking his library from under his arm, began his work, His large practice, extensive law and mis- cellaneous library, elegant rooms joining the bank, and the many busi- ness interests which revolyve around him, are evidences of his popularity, energy, enterpriso and professional success, J.
