Oaxpare, Neb., March 20.—Last week our busy little town had a very close call by fire; the dwelling of Mrs. Dr. Campbe'l was des'royed. We have a flourishing G. A. R post hers of about 35 members and perhaps as many more to muster. We having—in the future—a regular old time campfire. Who of your good talkers will volun- teer to come up on that “‘don’t all speak at once.’ Prospects for the spoedy settlement of the B. & M. tax question in this county are good, although our friends hills above here, would discourage it if possible, and after all of their opposing the B. & M. in this tax business, they are vain enough to think that they will got the B. & M. with its round house, machine shops, ete., ete., should that company see fit to extend its road from Columbus to this section of country. However, we are not going to quarrel with them or the company about it. We know where the B. & M’s “60 thonsand acres of land in Antelope is located, as fine as the sun shines on too,” and that 18 what makes us take it 8o easy, the future will tell the tale. Wo have one tip-top flouring mill and water power enough for two more, the Cedar Creek. The water seems to say as it rushes along and inits course catches sight of Horace Gove's sheep, on the side hill near cown, who will place a woolen mill by my side, and check me for a time at least, before T contemplate near oceasion! pass into that quick sand stream, the Elkhorn, where I never more can be of use to man. 'Tis said we have one ‘‘sufferer” am ng our town ladies; 'tis further as- ser od that she has not time to ‘‘darn her stockinzs or keep her kitchen clean.” How far oft the mark would I be should I say ’tis so with three- fourths of “em?” If those ‘‘suffering sisters” care a continentalabout Christ or his teachings they had better drop this foolishness. For the time com- eth when every man shall “‘set” under his own vine and fig tree, and as there is no women mentioned in this con- nection by same authority I conclude she is out gathering figs for ‘‘Bofe.” One must read between the lines to grasp the full meaning of scripture. You bet. PirariM, THE EDISON LIGHT. Its Practical Use in New York Houses —Complete buccess. From a New York Letter, Mr. Edison, the grcat inventor, has taken up his abode in New York City, on Fifth avenue, directly opposite the headquarters of his electric lighting bureau, and ¥ill remain until the heat drives him back to his lovely home in Meulo Park. I went down to the of- fice the other evening with some friends, and we were kindly shown through the place. It isa handsome dwelling house, which has been adapt- ed to the uses of the bureau of the Edison electric light. We were shown the different manners of using the light. The Brush light hasa cold, steely glitter, which is painful to the «y»s when near, though raised on high as a means of 1lluminating the streets, it gives a moonlight efiect; but the ‘I;Jdimn light is not only not painful, ut SOOTHING TO THE EYES, While shedding a soft and clear radi- ance, as powerful as it is pleasant. The 1ncandescent horseshoe burner is inclosed in a glass lamp, shaped some- what like a _thumb screw, or even of the burner itself, until it brings two wires in contact, the light is produc- ed, each burner giving the light of sixteen candles. Some of the lamps age of colored and some of ground glass, and they never seem to heai. Cut tissue paper laid over the lamwps show how little heat they give off. In the large front room a great chande- lier is placed, with all lamps turned downward, thus throwing all the light downward, a result impossible to ob- tamn with gas. Drop lights are made, which have an insulated cord attached. The lights (or lamps) are artistically made, and usually have ground glass or porcelean shades, They are just the thing for writers or students who burn the midnight oil. A button on the floor, in a corner, which one can press with his foot, cuts off the connection, and the room is instantly m darkness. Itis lighted by means of a similar button. In applying THE ELECTRIC LIGRT IN HOUS Wires passing around from room to room are used, the lamps being at- tached where desired. A child, or even an ordinany servant girl, can light them, and there is no smell or danger whatever. One can take hold of the wires without getting a shock heavier than one can obtain from a little pocket battery, and there is ab- solutely no danger from sparks, as none are emitted. There is a mater, by means of which the amcu: ¢t of elec- tricity used can be detesi ined toa nicety, by an accurate 1 (lod ob- tained by a deposit of copper, which is in some manner beyond my power of comprehension. Power for run- ning sewing machines and other en- gines not requiring over five-horse power, can be furnished also at houses. Every portion of the city is divided off into square miles, and in each is to b a sort of station, from which the sup- ply will be obtaned for all the re- quirements of that district, Subter- ranean cables, wires inclosed in gutta- percha tubes, will pass through each street a foot and a half under the sur- face, and leading from these will be the wires that supply the houses. It is hard to bring the public to adopt a.y new thing, even ifitis good, and there has been a great deal of talk about the electric light being injurious to the eyes. These new lamps have proved the contrary, and 95 per cent of the people canvassed have ordered wires laid in their houses and offices. Good,Pluck, but Little Discretion. Columbus (Miss. ) Times. There were four bales of cotton brought in market yesterday from the lantation of Colonel ¥, Terry, who ives near Waverly Hall,Harris Coun- ty, Geo that were grown and gathered in the year 1860, fided with ropes, and have been reposing in his gin-house ever since, He was offered forty-seven and one half cents for it in 1865, but would not sell because he thought the revenue tax of three cents per pound was unjust, ard he said he would rather burn the cotton than submit to such injustice by the gov ernment. e had at the close of the war upward of 100 bales of cotton, and still has a fow more left. Forgetting, a week befo his customary vigilance, he had swallowed a discarded ink bottle in his chowder, and, unable to eat, was dying of starvation. “Hisi!” cried the doctor. “‘I per- ceive a critie, [He charged high for crises.| “The danger is over and’ food will save him, but it must be had instantly - soup, fish, Roman punch, anything.” Like an eseaped meteor, the loving girl flew down the stairs to the restaurant, ‘‘Out upon thee, pretty jester; a bowl of soup within the hour? By me birthright, thou dost dream.” ““But it will save a life.” mured, with quivering lip."” “Nay, then we will see,” said the steward, who, startled by a twenty dollar piece, sat down and boegan to write a ietter to a waiter standing two tables away. Two hours and three quartersafter- ward a sable waiter, tray adorned, tore slowly along the corridor of the fourth floor and knocked at the door. The dying man’s eyes lighted up with an evanescent brightuess, and he smiled faintly as the waiter entered. “Thanks, = William, thanks,” he gasped feebly. ‘‘You are a little sub. sequent, but I die content. H.) Patriot. ml7d2w Very Rich Land. N. Y. Tribune. Not long ago a Western land agent had in tow a party of Eastern farmers to each of whom he hoped to scll a strip of land in the rich Arkansas Valley. He had devuted himself to them for a whole day, had dined and wined and ‘‘druv ’em,” but his most glowing acconnts of the furtility of the country could not bring his stolid hearers to the point of enthusiasm. Finally he had his revenge. With a sardonic smile one of the farmers ask- ed; “Well, Mr. Agent, is there any- thing that won’t grow here?” “‘Yes, pumpkins won’t.” “What!” exclaim- ed the cynical land-buyers together, ‘‘pumpking won't.” “No,"” said the agent” ‘‘there are men in this country who would give #2560 an acre for land that would mature a crop of pumpkins, They never have been able to get a crop since I've been here, and that's ten years.” Well, how strange! Why is it?” said land-buyer No. 1. “Well, sir, the soil is 8o rich that the vines grow so fast they wear the pumpkins out dragging them over the ground.” FARMERS AND MECHANICS, If you wish to aveid great danger and trouble, besides a no small bill of expense, at this season of the year, you should take prompt steps to keep disease from your household. The system should be cleansed, blood purified, stomach and bowels regula- ted, and prevent and cure diseaset arising from spring malaria, We know of nothing that will so perfoctiy and surely do this as Electric Bitters, and at tho trifling cost of fifty cent a bot tle.
