About one hundred men were present and were quiet aud orderly. No laborers appeared to be protected and the ice soon left, Neither Contractor tephenson nor his ‘‘boss,” Mr, Oallahan, were presest and in a shory time the assembly dispersed and came up town. One notable exception there was, a deaf and dumb man being on hand and at work, ns he has been all through the trouble, He has never yot heard of the strike and prob- ably will sot and he has not been molested by the strikers, A meeting having been called for 9 o'clock, at the city hall, that hour saw quite a large gathering of men at the corner of Sixteenth and Farnham. The city hall was not open, and the crowd soon adjourn:d to ‘‘Jefferson Square,” where the uecting was called to order, and M: Edward Walsh chosen chairman. Mr. Walsh addressed the crowd at some length, and in the m st sensible and logical manner, advocated or- ganization, the adoption of a definite object, and the appointment of a committee to wait on Mr. Stephenson and confer with him, showing him by a comparison of the cost of living with their wages thattheyasked nothing unreasonable. Tho specch had a good effect on the assembly and his propositions were assented to right through except by a few hot-headed individuals in the outer edge of tho arowd who are consi icuous chiefly for ness. It was resolved to fix their price at $1.76 per day and stand by ic. A comthittee of six were then ap pointed to wait on Mr. Stephenson and present thefcase to him, General Estabrook was called on to address the meeting and responded :n a graceful manner. He began by saying that when he crossed the street he had no more idea of mounting a dry goods box for a_speech than he had of working for $1.25 a day. We wish the pro- prietor success in his enterprise, AN EARLY FIRE. John Lewis' Boarding House Burned Out, Narrow Escape of the Whole Block. About 5 o'clock this morning two or three persons on Capital avenue between Tenth and Eleventh streets, discovered a small blaze on the nortk.- caat corner of the large frame build- ing occupied by Mr. John Lewis as a boarding and lodging house. Cries of fire were given and soon after the whistles on the river bottom also sounded the alarm. Harry Davis, Mr. Lewis' step-son, was the first to get out of the house, and assisted by L. J. Leming, a near neig'.bor, attacked the iiflames, then l‘ut small in extent with pails of water. In the meantime the rest of the inmates were aroused, and, about fitteen or sixteen in number, hurried to escape from the burning building. An outsider ran to turn in the alarm, but was so long about it that it was half-past b o’clock before the department was on the ground, the excessively muddy streets delaying them a good deal. "It was then found that the -wrenches for opening the hydrauts were not along and more time was unavoidably lcst. The fire, meanwhile, spread slowly until it enveloped the whole upper part of the house and jumped to a small cottage on the east, also owned by Mr. Lewis and occupied by Mrs. Julia Ray and her litde 12 year old daughter. Then astream was got on and the fire quickly put out. Time had been given to save a great deal of the furniture from both houses, for there was not a particle of wind or the whole block would probably have gone. The whole upper portion of the hotel was destroyed ancl the build- ing isa total wreck. The cottage is a total loss and another adjoining house scorched. ‘The loss on the hotel is about $800 and on furniture $100, on which there is an insurauce of $800, on the build- ing in the Niagara Insurance company of New York, On the smaller house there is $300 insurrmce and $100 on the furniture in the Metmpule, of Paris.
