Holding me thes in an aron grip and glaring fisreely at me, he said: ‘I see your gamy; there's enly one way of dealing with the police. The letter.closed with a requast that I would call at once on the-fupeninserdent. Semewhat to my disway, I found, on presenting myself, that my peir- manent appointment wae conditional upon my eatisfactorily carrying through a special job then on hand. It was an affair of some aicety;and an old hand, fram another station, would have rbeen given the work, but for being ebsent or other business. ‘'The matter would admit of no delay;and it wes simperatively necessary that it was undertaken by some cne not, or seemingly not, belonging 4o the Mal- bourneforce. &n short, I was to.do it. Theamatter was briefly this: A packet of government papere, of high importance, had been stolen from the messenger to whose care they wers H intrusted; and from information re- ceived, itweemed pretty cortain that ttheir present poasessor —a aman ifast becoming notorious m the :colony—| would be walking toward the cityj| next afteryoon; and to prevent his in- timate acquaintance withthe town en- #bling him to escape, or any confed- erates attempting his release, I was to weit by a bridge on the line of the road, about ten milesa out of Mel- bourne, and get the papers from him. The man was by no means to be shot, or if possible, even hurt; but the pa- = | pers must be secured. Minute in- stractions as to his appearance were followed by a pretty plain implication that my career in the force would very largely depend upen my success. I felt, as maybe easily imagined, in anything but high spirits. The pros- pect of a single-handed encounter with a man of whose resources I knew aothing, and who might blow my beains out before I had a chance of at- tack, was wot cheering. However, there was noghing for it; it was my last chance, and 1 must embrace it without shirking, Next day, wkich was Sunday, I ac- cordingly procured a horse from the station, and, taking my revolver with me, started out to try my luck a4 a policeman; and about two o’clock in the afternoon came near the place mentioned. I left my horse at the nearest roadside ‘‘hotel,” sauntered to the bridge, and, leaning over the rail with no very distinet notion of how I was going to act, waited for my :mm with what coolness I could mus- er, Two hours had passed; the sun was U. Niohrara Pioneor. s The Pioneentlias never ‘‘tied” wery closely to rings. It has been for the past.oj;tht years independent enovgh to speak plainly upon all local gues- tions, ¢nd many times to its detri- ment. But it s always felt rj, enough to speak“beldly and come.out on theside it has taken with a fear- leseness which stmuck terror to the gp- position. Almost alone in its war upon imposing politicians, The Pio- neer hag probably been abused more, than any.other journal in Northern Nebraska. Being ¢ied to no office, having received ne¢ benefits for its single-handed Dbattles, yot it is with 10 little pleasure to tknow that those higher in politics than Congressman Valentine, .at least appreciate those Jabors which have keen given toa better cause than he hes seen fit to champion. In other words, The Pioneer has preferred o be whipped .out than whipped into a political ring whose' main object is *‘power and erestige.” There was a {ime when the monop- alists of this state were all powerful, and everything was demanded of the people and nothing returned. Men wene sent to the legislature who were whipped in line by great railiead cor- porations, and who laughed at the constituency who sent them. Con- gress was represented by men who would gell out the people and work ainst measures which they demand- should be attended to. Politics throughout the state were worked by a machine, and the men who dared to clog its movements were branded as thieves and cutthroats and villians, Monopoly had full sway even down to petty county offices. But in 1876.7 we had a change. The bone and sinew of the state the farmers and mechanics und independent states- men—armed themselves with weapons which monopolies and rings could not touch, They elected a man to the United States senate who had proved in times past, as governor of Nebras- ka, that he worked with the people and for the people. Senator Saunders has proven all that the people ex pected. Last winter the same element of the party elected Senator Van Wyck to the United States senate, and, though only just having come into shat hody of great m nds, ho has already begun to show them that re- forms whereby the people are inter- ested are greatly needed. Thus iv is that The Pioneer prefers to fight the battles with the people’s candidates than to cling to men who have no higher motives in politics tban ‘“‘power and prestige.” We surely have had enough of that as a nation, deen too much in our state and don’t want any more in our enjoyment. rough Cars bobween Chicago, Peorls, Mll maukoe and Missourl River Pointa; and close con nections at all pointe of Intersection with other eonds.
