It contains 23,121 square feet of ground and ts assessed at $5 a square foot, makin $125,605. The building cost the bank $176,455.66, and could not probably now be built for less than $150,000. The government pays an annual rent for the use of the Dullding of $20,600. The Senate, in executive session, yesterday af- ternoon, by a vow of thirty-nine to twelve, confirmed the nomination of Rosoe Conk- Iing to be an Assoctate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. ‘The twelve opposing votes came from four republicans and eight democnts, a8 tok lows: Republicans—Messrs. Hoar, Morrit, Hawley and Dawes. Democrats—Messrs. Jonas, Bayard, Saulsbury, Jackson, Wade Hampton, George, Pugh and Morgan. Senator Sherman did not vote, being paired with Senator Pendleton. Senator Butler,of South Caroltna,was patred with Senator Cameron, ' of Pennsylvania. Mr. Lapham, of New York,voted for coufitmation. Mr. Miller, of the same ‘state did not vote at all. “Both Senator Edmunds and David Davis voted for confirmation. A report was current late last night that Mr. Edmunds voted agalnst him. ‘This proved untrue. The proceedings in the executive session were not at all protracted, and the consideration of the nomination did not occupy over twenty minutes. Senator Hoar, of Massachusetts, did not, as was expected, mike a speech in ‘opposition to the nominee.’ Senator Beck asked if there was any Senator who could give the assurance that Mr. Conkling Would accept. If there was, and he could be assured he would accept, he would vote for his confirmation, otherwise he would not. Mr. Beck did not vote at all, being paired. ‘The oppo- nents of Mr. Conkling In the Senate were busy all yesterday morning, endeavoring to unite a strong Opposition.
