Abbott, clerk of the financo com- mittee, resorted the total amount of orders issued since April 1Ist, 1881, 844,884 24, or on an average, §5,610.53 per month, The myor gots about €8 per month, the city council about $4 each, the chief of polico $100, the policemen 870 each, the recorder about $100, his clerk 825. Some of the money goes into our streots, and the rest can be accounted for satisfuc- torily, no doubt. Alderman Fonda was added to the pavement committee, and said the committes asked further time. The chiof of police, H. H. Field, reported the number of arrests during November to be 102, and the amount collected in licenses and fines $672; which, covsidering the number of sa- loons and crimes we have in our midst, looks small, as if there was a large kitten under the meal. The council, however, voted that all sa- loons it coming to time in regarc. to licenses will be closed up aund liceuso cancelled, and Chief Field was in. atructed to close all such unless the money is immediatoly forthcoming. He that they believed then as they de now, that toadvertise and represent te the voters that the polls would be kept open until 6 o'clock, and then closc them two hours sooner, was such gross deception as to vitiate the elec |tion. This was the reason they re- fused to count and declare the vote Recd, and when settled they will abide by it without further appeal; that tho idea that they have any de sire to remain in the position they simply moonshine of the thinnest kind. As for the charge of malfeas ance brought against them, they could stand it if the city could, ~He rerrots very much that such a ecourse has been taken in the premises; that all concerned should have waited pa tiently for Judwe Reed's decision, and abide by it. Ho believed that the council acted in good faith, aad had they not believed the election was illegal, for the reason above given, they certainly stiould have counted the vote. A TOUGH CUSTOMER. T'wo of var police force, Tyson and Sterling, had quite a ficrce encounter | with & drunken man named James Muthorn, last Friday night. The man_ was in the bar-room of the St. Joe hotel on Main street, acting in such a manner that the proprictor was obliged to have him forcibly ejected. This got his mad up and ho made up his mind to take charge of that end ot the town. He was getting too disor- derly for any use when the offices above referred to came ors his track and attempted his arrest. Ho resisted vigorously and closed in on Sterling who troke a pretty good sized stick over his skull. = They iched and Sterling feli on top. The man succeeded in getting one of the ofticers fingors in his mouth and be- gan to chew it fine, when ‘lyson pound:d his head just enough to loosen his lower jaw a little. A milk vendor by the name of Scherer was driving on Sixth street, on Saturday, when his horses became frightened and unmanageable. They dashed at full speed, throwing the milk cans right and left. The driver dropped the lines and jumped. The horses dashed away, striking a lamp- post. The wagon was overturned, and the milk cans were seattered in every direction The only damage done was the breaking of the pole of the wagon.
