Judge Post in the Rele z;f a Politioal Cavada Bill, With Nance, Carns and Reese as Pardners in the Confi- dence Game, Damaging Disciosures Which Tear the Mask ot Du- plicity From the Hideous Face of Selfish Am- bition. An Eye-Opener for the Legis- lature, And a Timely Warning to the People of York, Hamilton, Seward, Butler, Polk, Saundersand Dodge Counties. ial Corveapondince of T Bes , Neb, January 10Tt wasin the fall of 1857 adoption of the new co provided for the increase of our ju- diciary from threo to fir> .| odges tndependent of the supreme court, that I first heard the name of the man who has, since then, fizured very prominentlyin Nebraska politi His name was brow Bt up in a die- cussion about candidates forthe judge- ship of the Fourth judlcial district. ““What sort of a man is this Mr, Postl” T asked Judge Lake, for whose opinions on public men 1 have great respect. “Heisa youngman ¥ very much respsct and admire,” said Judge Lake. ““He has a natural bent for the bench, and I thiok would make a very good judge in the due course of timm. Among the many yonng lawyers that practice befote me, I know of none whom I could recommend so highly.” With such fiattering recommenda- tion from the then chicf jontice of Nebrasks, I regarded it very safo to endorse Mr. Post’s candidacy, and when a fow wecks Iatet he was trium- phanily nontina‘ed over his competi- tors, THE BEE expressed its gratifica- tion in an article that was very eulo. gistic, and assured the people of the Fourth judicial district that thuy could not elect & better ¥ian to the bench. My persiaal relatious with Mr. Post from that time to this have always been friendly. There came a time, however, when I was sadly un- deceived as to this man's character. In the early part of October, 1878, we met on the floor of the Livcoln opera house as delegates to the _republican state ocnvention. Judge Post beaded the delegation from York, and T was a member of the delegacion from Donglas county. In political parlance, we were both supposed to belong to the same faction. Thepeoplo of York county, whom Judge Post represented on the floor of that convention, are, for the most part, sturdy facmers, and as intensely opposed to the domins- tion of monopolies, and especially to the political misrale of Jay Geuld, as Tam. Andinevery succeeding con- vention their representatives had worked and voted sgainst the U. P. candidates. The delegation of which Judge Post wee then leader were s earnest and sincere anti-monopolists asany in the convention, but their implicit faith in Judge Poet’s politiosl fidelity led them astray and made them play tne disreputable role of stool-pigeons for the U. P. managers. When the convention met _the monopoly faction rallied around E. K. Valentine as their candidate for congress, while the anti-monopoly republicans, with the exception of some twenty-six delegates, gave their support to Judge Crouse. The twenty six *‘off sheep,” among whom Judge Post was the leader, were dele- gates from the countles of York, Dodge, Saunders, Batler and Polk— the very centre of the Fourth judicial district, and their pretended candi- date was Mr. Blauchard, of Fremont. It was evident from the outeet that this was a put-up job by U. P. strikers, who had devised this scheme to defeat Judge Crounse Crounse by withdrawing from his sup- port delegates who wero either abso- lately opposed to Valentine or dared not vote for him, and face their con- stituency. In vain were all appeals to Judge Post to drop his man—who had ro eartbly show—and fall in with the body of auti-monopoly delegates, to the support of Orounse. Mr. Post stubbornly refused to yield, ineisting that the mountsin must come to Mo- bammed—that the one hundred and tweaty-five delegates must leave their man, who had been tried and proved true, and pick up a man who had no more vitality in him than sn Indian image in front of s tobacco shop, aod only mustered twenty-six votes. All the time while playing the part assigned bim by the conspirators who put up this infamous job—Mr. Post was profuse with professions of loyalty to the principles he avowed and be- trayed. Upto the very last ballot be protested that he didn’t want Valen- tine nominated, but had obligat to fulfill. What those obligati 0on became manifest when Mr. Post consolidated the Fourth Judicial dic- trictefor Nance and Carns. When Judge Post roee in his seat to put E. C. Carns in nomiuation for Lienten ant governor the maskdropped. Never in my political cxperience was I taken back wore than when Judge Postina steatorian voice proclaimed to the re- publicans of Nebraska that Carns was the embodiment of sterling integrity and the highest type of American manhood. So extravagant was Mr, Post's ealogy that in closing his per- oration he aroused a_general “guf. farw” among the andience, when he MAEA, - - . - NBV declared in all earnestness that Carns bad been true in all his relations of life, not only as & publi asa falthful husband and devoted father, The Judesin his emotional slopping over had forgotten that Carns wag then still a “bachelor forlorn,” nd if he was was aware of it. ~ At the very moment when this judicial Daniel was pro oiaiming Carns as the model of integ rity, I had the following letter in my pocket: Davtp Crrr, Neb., Sent. 30, 1878 Hon. E. Bosewater Mr Dran Sim—Having notized aid heartily agresingwith your course toward the U. Cootsr. ad not ssen this letter, but was just as well posted about the true relations of Catars to the U, P, as though he had written It himself, The climax of jud:cial propristy was capped at the ¢ mvention when Judge Post crat, tne aqlid vote of York coun- t for Otis Ballou, s superlntendent of public instruction. 1 remon-trated, and called his attection to the fact that Ballou was ao attorney, and had uo_qualifications for school supein- tendext, while Professor Thompson was an experienced educator. Judge Poet responded that he had to carry out his agreements. What sort ot & Tepresentative s & man Who would deliberately eater into a compact to boost then into position who are no- toriouly dishoucet, or whoso qualifica. tions are queetionablel As a reward for his services to Nance and Carns, Judge Post had a walk-away for the renomination (o a second term in the Fourth judicial district last year by the active aid of his partners in du- plicity. Had raputable coali- tion disbanded after their last act of mutual office brokerage, I should have buried. the whole matier in oblivion. The bovrdless ambition of these po- litical place-hunters is unbridled, and nothing short of ahsolut® control of the stain will 3atisiy them. 1 have comb iuto possession of facts within the past fow days that impel me to disclose their designs and frustrate the intrigues that would tarnish the good namo of this state and disgeace it in the eyes of the nation P 5 elo. A congpira i wllrcoy Bir. Nanms B to the United Statea senate; Carns is to bo made governor; Judgo Post is to become general dispenser of federal patronsge in the Fourth judicial dis- trict, which he is to represent in con- green two years hence, while District- Attorney Recse is to be promoted to the judgship vacated by Post. In other words the plot has been Iaid to concentrate all the influence of Carns, Post and Reess for Nance as Pad- dock’s suoceasor, and Nance guarsn- toes senatorial influence that will send Pest to congress and make Reeze a judge. This programme ia to be car- ried out by a repeiition of the disrep- utable game that was played at Lin- coln in October, 1878, when Valen- tine, Nanco and Carns were first nom- insted. The members in tha legisla- tore that represent the Fourth ju- dicial dirtrlct are to become tools for carrying this scheme into effect. The roping-in process has already be- gun. Judge Post fn making personal canvass among mem- bers of the legislaturo ostensibly for himaelf, but in reality for Nance. While Nance professes to bo lsboring for Paddock, the men whom he con- trola aro to throw for Post until Pad- dock can be convinced that he has no show. Now, I have no desire to sec Paddock re-elocted, when_thero aro 20 many sbler and more reliablo men in the field, but I despiso_troachery and duplicity. It would be no Im- provement on Paddock to elect Nanoe, and it would be an outrage upon the peoplo of Nebraska to put Carns in the governor's chsir. T hope the farmersof York, Seward, Polk, Butler, Dodgo and Sannders counties will riso en masse to enter protest agains*. this programme, and instruct their representatlves to retire Paddock, leavo Nanco whero he is, and support no man who'is in_collus! ion with this gang of conspirators whose only smbition scems to be to ‘make merchandise of the highest po- sitione within the gift of this common- an $yat wealth.
