The contested seats of Fox and Barber sgainst Paxton and McShane inthe house, and Doaneand Howe in thesenate, were then considered. Senator Myers made furious on behalf of Coutant and Locke, and opposed the opening and close of sec tiona of the returzs. Gen. Van Wyck rebuked theat. tempt to smother investigation in this matter. Before the package was opened, Doane and Howe wera called into the house to witness the opening of the returns, and Mr. Doane said the pack- age had been tampered with. ~Thin package contained the ballots, and was sealed first by a notary public, and subsequently by the officers of election. He said none of the latter scals had been broken. Baldwin, attorney for tho contest- ants, wanted the reals left whole for the inspec'ion of the committee.
