THE IRON TRAIL. | Prospects for a General War on Passenger Rates. Railway News & d Notes of In- terest. It is intimated in railroad circles that the C., B. & Q road is quietly taking a hand in the wat between the Wabash aud Chicago and Alton roads by enabling thelatter to sell through tickets to Council Bluffs at the same figares as the Wabach and carry her passengers there by the K. 0., St.Joo &OC. B., which is controlled by the «Q.” As thisisin oncsense a diver- sion of travel from the pool Iines, tho Rock Island and Northwestern, of course, take exceptions and it is likely that if the allisnce continues there will be a general cuiting of rates be- tween Omaha end Chicago as well ag from cities south of us. Asthe Altort road gives the C., B. & Q. its most convecient connection from Kansas City to St. Louis, which taken away would leave itat the mercy of the Gotld reads, it would appear that it would not be easy to destroy the pres- ent arrangaments. Unlessan amica- blo settlsment is arrived at their is no telling how soon the pool may be con- siderably agitated. THE LAST SPIKE, The last rail on the Omaha division of theSt. Paul and Omaha railway, was laid on Fgday, and the junction with the nOtth end made about the center of the Omiaha Indian reaerva- tion. The telegraph line along the road is mearly completed, &nd the work of moving freight will begin this week. Only lceal freight that cannot be held back will be handled at present aud passenger trains will not be put on before January 1st. THE PAUACE BUILDEES. The railroad conductors of the Rail- way Conductors’ Insurance Associa tion will meet in anoual convention at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago on Wednesay next, and after a two days’ session will take a big excursion trip. _The Chicagoand Northwestern and Union Pacific companies have placed at the disposal of these lucky fellows, who will be fully two hun- dred strong, a epecial train of five Pallman coaches, which will run from Chicsgo to Omaha over the C. & N. W. road, and through from this city to San Francisco over the Union and Central Pacific roads. The train will run through without change, leaving Chicago on next Friday morning and arriving at the Transfer the following morning in time for breakfast at the Union Pacific hotel. This train is to be run tothe Pacific coast and back free. The conductors will be absent two weeks or eighteen days, and wili stop at all points of interest between Omaha and San Francisco. Omaha and the Union Pacific rail- road compary will be represented on this excursion by the following knights of the punch: Jim Cruickshanks, Jim McHugh and_Jim Kernahan, The latter, Johnny Moore eays, is go- ing to take another lock at the Salt Lake tabernacle. © RAILWAY BRIEFS. The enormous earniags of some of the great lines of railway may be been that of the Wabash for October, which smounted to $1,226,671. Tho lust report of the U. P, for August, shows tne total earnings to have been $2,174,422,22. Deduoting the ope- rating expenses $1,005,317.02, the net gain is $1,169,105 20. The fron posts for the shed over the platform of the Northwestern company at the U. P. trausfor are now all up and work on the roof will be com- menced this week. Two or three cars per week of _can- ned and tierce beef and pork will bo shipped to England during the winter by Harris & Fisher. An advance of five cents per hnn- dred pounds on eastern freight rates, has been ordered at a meetiag of the general freight agenta of castern lines, to take placs Nov. 22. The report that the Union Pacitic and Central Pacific railway companies are to be consolidated at an early day obtains a good deal of credence.
