A DEN OF SNAKES. TWO BARK-PEELERS KILL FIGRTEEN RATTLESNAKES. Boston Herald. Two bark-peelers, Jason Cortright and Hiram Kirby, made a singular discovery i, the woods near High Knob, Po., last Thursday. They bad bern peelmg bark in Monroe County, Pa., and were returnivg to their h-ms in Delawarge. unty, N. Y. Between | Monrce coumty, where they were workiog, and H'gh Knob the covntry is an almost unbroken wilderve:s, there being fow clearinge, sud the roxd is a very lonely snd crooked one. They left the bark woods whera they had been laboring early in the moru- ing and nothing marred their progre:s for some time. when they were star- tled by a fierce rattling noise like that made by a rattlesnake. Kirby, vho is an old lumbarman, hay- inglived his entire life among_the mountains of Delaware county, New York, appeared wholly indifferent and told Cortright they would hunt the rattler and dispatch it. Stepping to ore side of the road in the thick un- derbrush Kirby felt something strike his boot-leg. Jumping back and cast- ing his eyes In front of him, he dis- covered a monater rattlesnake coiled The men re- treated a fow steps and pickiog up several missiles approached to within afew feet of the reptile, which was still basking in the eunshine and suc. creded in killlng i*. It measured nearly eeven feet and had seven rat- tles. Kirby tied a hickory withe about the reptile’s neck and the two lumber- men continued cn their way toward home. They had gone lesy then a quarter of a mile when they were again startled by a rattled by a rattling noise. Believing there was s snake den not far off, they concluded to change their course somewhat. They were to the left of the road, and in the direc'ion of tae *‘Kuob.” Every step they took seemed to bring them nearer to the noise, and they halted, and being tired sat down upon an elevated piece of ground to rest. While thus ceated zeveral rattlesnakes passed through the brush a few feet in front of them. This aroused the travelers, for they knew there was no #'ock operations, and young farmers just starting for themselves and cn- sidering what will bo most likely t» help them on, have had theic attention | and mutton interest. !is the domivant breed of sheep in t'.e Un'ted Stat:s »s we'l as in Grot Britain. As a mutton skeep, it1 size, a3 woll as the quality of its flesh, are among i's chief recommendations, while it is hardly nc thatits wool entersso largely iuto very desirable fabrics, thst it has be- come indispensable to a vast cla 5 of manufacturers engaged in the woclen iodustry. Boawi‘ul aud styles of goods for ladies wear, as well as plain and fancy styles for men are made from the staple obtained from this breed. To start rignt is of the first impor. tance. It may and will cost rome- thing additional to procure sheep for breeding stock from the_flocks of the best breeders, but it will psy in the outcome. Thisjustly renowned broed furnishes an excellent carcass of mutton. It has sometimes turned the heam at 300 0340 Ibs. at 18 montha old, and at 24 years, 400 Ths.—the strongest possible evidence of its fattening habit and early maturity. The hardiness and constitutional vigor of the breed is proverbial. These sheep are very docile, the ewes are prolific breeders and excellent mothers. They shear a Targe fleece when judiciously bred and cared for, yielding sometimes a8 high a8 18 to 22 pounds of unwashed wool annually, whils tke shriok in scouring i3 but little—from 18 to 20 per cent. LOVES YOUNG DREAM. A HOMANTIC STORY WITH ONE CHAPTER. Tho_Cincinnati Enquirer has the following in the form of a dispatch from Madison, Indiana: There came to the Oity Beneath the Hills not long since a younggentleman hailing from the Qucen City snd en- gaged as a clerk in one of our leading main cross-street stores. The beauty of the Hoosier girls was so fascinating that, the aforesaid youth, fresh from the land whera presidential candidates grow so plentifully—at once became a longer any doubt that -they were in close proximity to a snske den. Step- Fin;zh the edge of the knoll and lookitg toward the bottom, & sight, the like of which had never before seen, met_their gaze. Coiled uwpon stones and sticks were scores of rat~ tloenakes. Cortright, who had a bitter dislike for snakes, suggested to bis companion that they re- trico their steps and leave the snakes undisturbed. Kirby, howev- er persuaded his companion to open a warfare. They gathered a heap of stones and opened the battle. ~ With the dropping of the first stone among the reptiles, the noise and din that went up was almost desfening. The two lumbermen contintinued to pour avolley of missiles into the den, un- til what snakes they had not killed had made their escape into the rocks and underbrush. The victors then gathered up the dead snakes. The killed numbered eighteen, messuring 3 | from 34 to 5} feot in length. Cort- right and_ Kirby then proceeded on their way home. The above den was an old and noted one, being the one at which the late “Sem” Holms, & colebrated snake tamer, used to cap- turs miny of the reptiles ho exbibited throughout the states. Many are killed at this den every summor. —_— Successful Dary Farming. Farmers who devote any attention to making butter these times must keep up with the improvements to be successful. There is no branch of farming making greater progress in improvements than in _dairying. Though fine creamery butter, made from tha best butter cows, and treated in its manufactute with the greatest of care and neatnes, and manipulated and handled with the most approved dairy implements, is doing so well, inferior qualities of butter made in the old way, and poor, common or In- ferior stock are a drug in the market at loss than one-quarter the price. A fow years ago much of this butter would havo been accepted as good enough for the table. 'Fhl shows a very groat change in the public_taste. ou- sands of dollars were lost to dealers and producers this sesson from the production of inferior butter. If the farmer cannot make good butter, or sell his milk, he had better feed it to his hogs than to make it into poor but- ter. Why this great changein the public tastel” It has boen brought about by an imptovement in the breed of our cows, and by the great improvement in dairying implements, in the care and handling of milk as it comes from the milker to its fioal results in the form of . the golden butter ball. The old methods are things of the and it is only by modera and improv methods that we can succeed in-mak- ing butter that wifl suit_the popular taste. When farmers will pay more atten- tion to cows and the , aud make butter that will bring a amile to the face of the purchaser, a3 well a8 one cn the face of the farmer when he re- ceives the purchase movey, then will dairying pay better thap anything clso on the urm.h’l'hu cow's milk, roper] ndled, is a sure crop. As ?‘n‘:: t{n early bird that catches the worm,” #q it s the one who watches the signs of the times and seizes hold of every modern imprevement to en- hance his products or lessen his labor, that wins the golden price of success. ——m Poultry Raisiug. The improved breeds of ‘poultry have made poultry raising profitable on the farm, the increased numbers of good lsyers have increased our sup- ply. of eges. from baskets full to car loads, and the large breeds of chick- ens, turkeys; geese and ducks furnish an_important_supply of meat, which brings the highest price per pound of any mea} pold on the farm., Notwith- standing the opposition raised ten years ago to the improved breeds of poultry, the profitable feature bas overcome the ‘prejudice snd the im- proved breeds sre the rule rather than the exception on most of our western farm. The poultry interest has so greatly inoreased in importance with the increase of profita that more attention is given to supplying good poultry houres and giving them proper attention. Look well now to the young things, keep them well pro- tected from vermin; clean quarters, clean water, and plenty of clesn feed. Whea cleaning the perches in the pouliry house it is necessary to apply the mixture of kerosene oil and grease to the under eide as well as to the top. is often neglected, and tho Tice gather. thaee. Everything about poultry mansgement should bs thoroughly done to avoid failure. It is very desirable, in raising chickens for market, to have some of them come early, a8 the difference in price reslized for the early ones will pay for the extra troubls, if we but understand the necesssry requisites of success. If there is one error more apparent than another, it is that of allowing too many fowls to run and roost together. for matrimonial honors. His young heart went out, as it were, day by day, until he became 3o deeply enamored that his misery was unbeas- able, and the cruel and unrelenting parantal objection (he betng of tender years) weighed so heavily upon his inind that he sudden’y disappeared from our beautiful little city, whither no one knew. Shortly thereafter however, his fair dulcina also left the home of her youth and her native city to fellow in the wake of him to whom her young heart had already gone out, and for a short time nothing was heard of either. After a sa2son there came occasionally & rumor to the city how they wero en- joying themselves, that they had been made one flesh, and their happiness was supreme. But, also, how soon could all this happi and content- ment find its cup of joy turned to sad- ness and sorrow. There arrived at North Vernon, Indian, a few days 8go, from the great west, a couple bearing a very strong resemblance to the parties mentioned above in a rather forlorn condition, baving, it s alleged, run short of funds in St. Louis; disposing of most of their valuables succeeded in reaching North Veroon. On their arrival there they concluded to foot it to this city ratner than make further sacrifices, and accordingly set forth, arriving in due time, weary and feet- sore, but apparently happy in each other’s love. But now it seemr that the great sactifices made for each other have somewhat cooled their ar- dor, and our informant alleges that a suit for divorce will soon bs brought by tho youeg man—ha pleading the baby act, or that_he was “o'er young to marry yet.” It appeara they were actually married, and traveled in sev- eral different states. Furtber devel- opments are looked for soon. English Farmers told to Cros the Sea to Escape Poverty. London Times. 1t is becoming a serious problem what agriculturalists are to do. They will not get rents much lower in & hurry, for land still commands a high value in tho market, and i3 difficult to be got atall exoupt under special circumstapces. Large proprietors ‘wonld rather cultivate their own land at a loss than submit to a reduction of rent telling on its value. Nor have the farming class any right to éxpect to ocoupy land except on such terms a8 the owner may choose to in- sist upon. They have now tho world before them. Why do they not start for the regions . where land cau be cheaply remted and cheaply bought, within easy reach of the best market in the world, viz.: -aar own ! From all time this has been & moving world, ever scething with the warm currents of life, ever peo- pled with those who had received the order to *‘move on,” and had good resson to be thankful for it. There is nothing dark or gloomy or inscru- table in the future before us. Their- resistible demands of commerce have now bound together in closer unity than ever—the unity of mutual de- pendence—the vast, teeming Britich race. We really hang together tolive orto die. There has long ceated to be any difficulty or just scruple aris- ing trom the respective peculiarities of our political and social institu- tiops. An Englishman as much at home anywhere in North America as in_any county of Great Brit- ain or Ireland. Whyshould anybody pend his life and fortune in the at- tempt to geow here the food that he could grow quite 8s good and much more cheaply a fortnight’s voyage off. Grant that the appeal is vain to these who are grown old in dull stay-at- home ways, who are atraid of the sca, ordonot know or wish to koow where America lies. There are plen- z of young men ceming on, snd by is time they know the geography of the world as well as their fathers did that of their neighboring towns.
