New York, Junme 17.—Dealings in stocks today In the usually active first hour fell below a hundred .thousand shares, the second hour’s business con- tracted to one-fourth of that amount, ang that meagre figure shrank by one- third again during the mnoon hour. Transactions in less than nine thousand shares in a period of an hour comes as near idleness as often occurs on ths | floor of the New York stock exchange. The aggregate for the day was less than 200,000 shares, the smallest day's business for the year, and, in fact, i nearly two years, a mid-summer day in 1908 blocking the range of the com- parison with a total of 73,000. Brokers on the floor of the exchange were driv- en to horseplay as a resort from the dullness of conditions. None of the explanations offered were very convincing. The gloomy, oppres- sive weather was held partly respon ble. The observance of Bunker Hill day in Boston deprived the market of what has been a principal source of business lately, centering in the coppe group. The interruption of Boston business relieved the coppers from some pressure and opened the way to their moderate recove: The ap- proaching - enactment of the railroad Jaw was cited as another Tepressive factor. President Ripley of the Atchi- son, Topeka and Santa Fe was author. ity for the statement that his compan was waiting to see how the new law works before going on with improve- ments in view of its “drastic provisions.” The operations of railroad presidents under the new law and their opinions regarding it interest the stock market element.as much as the law itself. The home-coming of ex-Prtesident Roose- velt was another subject discussed as helping to hold up stock market activ- ity. The strength shown by the coppers was influenced directly by the reports of encouragement abroad over the course of that trade, and also by the requirements of a short interest amongst foreigners in copper mining shares. The price of the metal Te- bounded sharply in London. Money conditions excited only lan- guid interest in view of the stagnant condition of the money market. Pre- liminary estimates of the week’'s cur- rency movement promised another substantial increase in New York bank ing cash, sub-treasury operations for the week contributing to the showing. Business in bonds was rather better than in stocks, but there was no mark- ed revival, and the price movement was ragged and irregular.
