Do not experiment with small tanners, Deal direct with the Largest Custom Tanners of Hides, and Skins in the HE United States depart- ment of agriculture, in a new bulletin, has re- ported the results of seven years’ experiments with various varieties of spring wheat on the northern great plains, including the Iland usually classed as “dry farming country” in the states of North Dakota, South Da- kota, Nebraska, Montana, Colorado and Wyoming east of the Rockies. The results of these experiments show clearly that among the varieties tested Marquis is the best of the or- dinary hard spring wheats, and Kuban- ka is the best of the durum wheats. It is shown clearly that where rust is a serious menace the Kubanka easily outyields the Marquis. On the other hand, the Marquis appears to be both the largest yielder and the most rust- - resistant of the ordinary hard red spring wheats and where rust is not serious outyields the Kubanka. The Kubanka wheat runs heavier to - the bushel than the Marquis and also has a slightly higher yield of flour per bushel. On the other hand, Marquis wheat shows slightly more protein and considerably better on baking tests. Following are the results from 10 experiment stations in six states on the comparative yields of Marquis and the Kubanka variety listed as 1440 by the department of agriculture, which is the most commonly grown of the Kubankas, Most of the experiments covered periods of seven years, a few being for shorter periods: o Yield per acre is at your service. ? The higher baking test of Marquis, however, apparently more than makes up for the decreased flour yield as compared with Kubanka, from the millers’ viewpoint. The department of agriculture fige ures knock into a cocked hat one of the contentions of the millers, that regard- ing the test weight per bushel as an index of the milling value of wheat. As shown by these figures the Kubanka wheat, which sells for less than Mar- quis because of the latter’s superior baking qualities, averages more than three pounds higher to®he bushel. Red durum (D 5), the'variety origi- nated by Professor H. L. Bolley of North Dakota Agricultural college, shows a much higher rust resistance than any other variety. It rusted only 2.6 per cent, while during the same years and at the same experiment sta- tions the rust of Marquis was 21.3 per cent. The test weight per bushel av- raged 59.9 pounds, 8.2 pounds more than Marquis for the same years.
