He told me the other day that ads of a well-known farm machinery manufacturer, who has used our advertising columns with splendid results, will not appear any more in the Leader. This company frankly stated that the chamber of com- merce was “fighting” the crganized farmers and making it so “hot” for this company that the company would have to withdraw from the Leader, presum- ably to maintain its necessary financial and business connections. Leader ought to take you, its readers, into its confidence in regard to our ex- periences with advertisers. These experiences are highly interesting in them- selves and throw much light on our fight, and the fight of many other independ- ent publishers, to maintain a free press. So in every issue in this same place from now on I am going to discuss advertising with you. : I am going to give you important and often sensational facts. First, let me say that the Nonpartlsan Leader is the best pulling adver- tising medlum. circulating among farmers in the United States. This is not an idle boast. The records of those who use our columns demonstrate it. The Leader’s pulling power is due to your interest in the paper and your patronage of the manufacturers and business houses that use our columns. Yet it is an uphill fight to get advertising for the Leader. These interests are able in various ways.to influence or force advertisers to shy clear of the Leader. Even after they start to use the Leader they are sometimes compelled to withdraw on account of too great pressure of the farmers’ enemies, as the incident re- counted at the start of this talk shows. ° Now it follows that those advertisers who DO use our columns, who DO defy or ignore the threats of your enemies and our enemies, are business men whoido not seek to influence us, or UNFAIRLY fight your organization and your program. I do not say they APPROVE your program. But they are not UNFAIR.
