Mention the Leader When Writing Advertisera | v Book Reviews CURTIS PUBLICATIONS - ANSWER R. MORRIS’ pamphlet on “Freedom of the Press” has been s.reviewed " in these columns. One of the Curtis publications, the Saturday. Evening Post, was mentioned by Mr. Morris as an example of the fact that nine-tenths of the revenue of the popular .pe- riodical press comes' from adver- tisers, and only one-tenth -from the general public, the readers. Mr. Mor- ris, taking into consideration the cost of paper and other publication costs, estimated that the Saturday Evening Post cost $30,000,000 to $35;,000;000 a year to produce, and that with profits the total revenue.of the S. E. P. was probably $40,000,0'00 a year or more. The Curtis publications have now replied to this statement by Mr. Mor- ris. Their reply, by Barton W. Cur- rie, editor of the Country Gentleman, another of the Curtis publications, is in the nature of a “general denial” and is contained in a letter by Mr. Currie to F. B. Tipton, a Nonpartisan league farmer of Nebrasks. It follows: THE COUNTRY GENTLEMAN Barton W. Currie, Editor. The Curtis Publishing Company, Independence Square, N Philadelphia 3 17 June.9, 1920, Mr. F. B. Tipton, ~JHome Acres Farm, Seward, Neb, Dear Sir: I'am returning te you Mr. Morris’ fnnei- ful little pamphlet on the Freedom of the Press. Mr, Morris seems to know so much more about our business than we have any inkling of that I would hate to distress him with a few facts and thereby disturb his radiant dream. He has such a big:call for rhapsody in his business that he is entitled to all that he can summon from the clouds, Also personally he is a mighty good sort, so when you pass along my letter to him give him my kindest regards. -~ Very trnl yonu ON W. CURRIE. In answer to thlS Mr. Morris has gotten out a supplement to his pam- phlet, pointing out that Mr. Currie fails to give any facts or make any specific denial of the statements in the original pamphlet, and that an attempt to make a joke of the matter does not answer the arguments. In addition, Mr. Morzis gives the following state- ment from the Wall Street Journal, published since the pamphlet, which statement completely verifies Mr. Morris’ figures as®%o the S. E. Pi: 5 It is a remarkable fact that the Saturday Evening Post is now seélling for less than its. waste-paper value. Newsdealers and distributors who retail this publication to the public for a nickel ‘a copy, pay 3% cents a copy for it. At the same time paper trade journals are quoting ‘‘maga- zine overissue” waste paper at 3.55 to 3.70 cents per pound, f. o. b. New York. In other words, new, clean issues of the Saturday Evening Post, as they are re- ceived by the dealer, can be hought by him in New York for 3.50 cents and sold for somewhere between 4.44 and 4.62 cefils a copy, on the basis of a pound and a quar- ter per copy. Cyrus K. Curtis recently stated that the Post cost him something less than 24 c a copy to make. The paper of which lt is made is _now selling around 19 ‘cents a pound to those unfortunate publications which have to buy on the spot market, al- though the Curtis publications-get a more of thu situation the Curtis Publishing com- pany has just denied a rumored price raise for the Post, and announces it will stay at 5 cents per copy and $2.50 per year. The answer, of course, is in their enormous volume of advertising, measured by quan- tity or.gross return. The Nonpartisan -Leader still has a few of the original pamphlets left and will be glad to send a copy to any one sending a 2-cent stamp to cover post~ age. _RUSSIAN RELATIONS ‘Russian-American Relatl documents and papers compiled by Cumming and Walter W.
