Welghs 8000 1ba Strongea Clover Is"High, but Worth the Price ‘Indiana Farmer Gives His Experience in Dealing With : _ Fields Thinned by Drouth T THE present cost of i| clover seed (a dealer quoted.it to me at $33 today) a number of farm- ers are going ‘to shy away from it, or at least that is what some are saying. It will not pay to miss growing clover or -some’ other legume this year, and when you come right down to prices of everything clovers are about as cheap as other legumes. I believe it will pay to take an extra precaution in getting the seed on the ground this year, harrowing the seed in or drill- ing it as may be most convenient. Perhaps there will be stands of last year’s seeding that will need to be thickened. The dry weather last summer helped to kill out a number of places in fields. All of our early sown clover, sown in March, is very good except on top of one knoll, while some sown in the latter part of April in oats suffered badly, and while it -was not killed ~out it was pretty thin ‘when our first snow arrived in December. It is the latter that is be- ing treated now to save it.and try to thicken the stand without putting on a lot of new seed. I thought this field might be saved by covering it with a coat of manure and so started®he spreader onto it in December and began to apply four or five loads to the acre. Part of the manure is from the hog and cattle and cow stables and a few loads are straw. I believe this fertilizing will stimulate the growth of the clover early in the spring and save the small- er plants from winter killing. FERTILIZER HELPS LEGUME CROPS 1. know a great many farmers do not practice manuring their clover,, believing that the function of clover* is to enrich the soil for other crops, but I have always noticed that clover which has been manured,” especially that on the high°ground, does a better job of enriching the soil than that untreated. It is easy to see why this should be the case. The bigger crops of clover you can grow and turn un- der the better will be:the crops that follow. We' have saved thin and spotted stands of clover before in this way, reseeding the thinnest spots lightly in March when necessary. As to applying manure, put it on as soon and as long as-it may be done to advantage. Manure applied lightly even after reseeding in March will be entirely out of the way by haying time if a few beating rains follow. Chaffy material is better applied early in winter. : Thin and frequent applications are the most desirable, put on with a ma- nure spreader.
