We stand for insurance against sickness and unemployment, and for old-age pensions. “But we are not only for human conservation and development. We are working also for the conservation and public development of the nat- ural resources of our country—for public ownership and development of our waterpower, minerals and forests.” Judge Castberg was asked about the struggle of the farmers in his ““Mexican Dollars” (Continued from page 3) May steps had been taken by the in- structors at the agricultural college to form an organization. In organizing their “union” the col- : lege professors and instructors had no intention of going on strike and thus tying up the state’s educational in- stitutions. The preamhle of their constitution recites- that the purpose of the organization is to aid their college as well as to better their per- sonal conditions. They are depending upon reason and the force of public opinion behind their organization. From the first the organized teach- ers have recognized the advantage of working with a state government that believes in organization. - Instead of threatening to discharge his subordi- nates for organizing, Doctor E. F. Ladd, president of the agricultural college, received their representatives and showed them that he was working in an eifort to provide better salaries, especially for the instructors, the low- est-salaried group on the teaching staff. The teachers at the agricultural college also wanted a revision of their contract, so that teachers might have their choice of signing on the basis of an 11-month year, with one month for vacation, or a nine-month year, giving three spare months to teachers who had means of earning outside money by lecturing, writing, etc. This was readily granted. The state board of administration, which has charge- of all educational, charitable and corrective institutions, also showed its willingness to work with the organized teachers toward getting them a“square deal. Today the teachers’ organization at the agricultural college takes in 85 per cent of the teaching staff. The university men and women were not slow in following the exam- ple of the college men and women. Their organization now comprises 80 per cent of the teaching staff. Public school teachers in North Da- kota are following the footsteps of the teachers in the college and university. In Fargo, the largest city in the state, the city teachers are organized prac- tically 100 per cent strong, and like the college and university teachers are affiliated with the American Federa- tion of Labor. The presence of these trained edu- cators and professional men in the counsels of organized labor promises to be of great aid to the labor move- ment. Through their national organ- ization, the American Federation of | Teachers, the college and university men will be represented at all future conventions of the American Federa- tion of Labor. Their organizations will send delegates to each annual meeting of the North Dakota State Federation of Labor and the college men will' sit in, each week, at the meeting of the Fargo Trades and La- bor assembly, while the university PAGE THIRTEEN o Y R AN Rk S AR s country to get their product delivered to the consumer at a reasonable han- dling cost—the fight against the mid- dleman. “We have our contest with the mid- dleman, of course,” he said, “but you must remember that in our country there are no such huge and powerful combhinations - of private capital, no such great industrial and commercial corporations as exist in some other parts of the worid. » “Yet-even so, we have seen the ne- cessity of a government-owned and government-operated flour mill, in or- der that the grain should be delivered to the people in the form of flour at the lowest possible cost. As a peace- time measure,. not a war measure, there has been put through the stor- -thing a law providing for the purchase of the largest flour mill in Norway. This mill now belongs to the nation.” and the H. C. of L. men sit in with the Grand Forks Trades and Labor assembly. The organized teachers of Fargo already have been granted a flat in- crease of $200 a year, an average raise of almost 20 per cent. The state board of .administration is work- ing out, with the presidents of the uni- versity and college, plans for increas- ing the salaries of the instructors and professors at these institutions.
