Even in 10 years democracy may supplant autocracy on the supreme court bench by simply letting nature take its course. When that happens, democracy will have ar- rived in America. events in our history was the election of four out of five members of the North Dakota supreme court by the j| organized farmers of that state. It is a sign of the times. He who runs may read. ; * * * WATCH the signs of the times. The old parties are dying, and don’t know it. They are in the hands of a holding company made up largely of lawyers and preachers—nonpro- ducers. Lawyers ran the old parties for years—for their clients. Now the pro- ducers are going into politics—not as Republicans and Democrats, but as PRODUCERS. Government by para- I sites is passing. Honest business has nothing to fear from this movement. It is a business movement—legitimate business. Some middlemen will be squeezed out—es- pecially professional politicians. There is room in it for every citizen who has a legitimate function to perform in organized society. Parasites will find |their level. . * x EGITIMATE big business won’t suffer. Business will be bigger— and better. But not for the parasite. There will be more organization—big- ger organization. Less competition. Less waste. Industrial democracy is coming. Watch the signs of the times. THINKS PAGE IS WRONG Froid, "Mont. Editor Nonpartlsan Leader: I read an article in the Leader, is- from a speech by George I. Page of the American Bar association on military justice, and will say that Mr. Page has been misquoted or does not know much of military law. In the case of a soldier overstay- ing his leave, he is not charged with desertion until he has been absent for a period of 30 days, and even then he can not be proved a deserter unless he has discarded the army uniform. The case of the 16-year-old boy is rather improbable. In the first place, he would have to tell a lie to get into the army at that age, and it is very unusual if he was not allowed at least one week after being discharged from the hospital in which to recuper- ate. Also if he left his post while on guard, if not properly relieved, he was liable to courtmartial. Your ar- ticle does not mention that fact. On the other hand, if he were prop- erly. relieved, he would not have been charged with being asleep on duty as he would not have been on duty. If disobedience, to orders is not mutiny, please tell me what it is. R. H. EDMAN. EDITOR’S NOTE: Mr. Page was correctly quoted by the Leader, and as the leader of one of our most con- servative groups, the lawyers, he would err on the side of conservatism. It would be a mistake, however, to infer from the article that all army camps and all army officers take ad- vantage of the old military code which we got from England in 1774 to mis- treat enlisted men. Nearly all prob- ably try to use modern standards of fair play. *The point Mr. Page wished: to make and which the Leader thought important, is that an old, barbarous code of procedure gives an opportu- nity to the few who are not right to Mr. Edman, who has been a private at Camp Lewis and who was released on January 3, has hardly- had an opportunity to study the military code and its origins or to survey the results of ‘'courtsmartial throughouf the ‘natxon.
