Editor Nonpartisan Leader: Enclosed herewith please find two pages from Successful Farming. What they say under the heading, ‘““The Tail Wags the Dog,” is plainly an augury of what they think will be the inevitable, last, sad end of the League. What they say about the United States Grain corporation seems to indicate that they stand in with the profiteers, for they consider wheat prices and grades O. K. and know only good things about the millers, grain exchanges, -etc. Well, maybe it is kind and nice of them to see only good things, but these articles remind me of the stand this paper took about two years ago, when the matter of mixed flour was discussed in congress and in the press. Iowa is a great corn state, we fellows know, and the pub- lishers of said paper had a bit of corn meal in their optics, or else others see imaginary and wunreal things going on in the business world: How would it be if you would publish some reply to Success- ful Farming in the Leader? To me it seems this paper is quite opposed to what the Leader has had to say about the matters in question. ALFRED KARLSON. In the article “The Tail Wags the Dog,” Successful Farming argues against the Nonpartisan league, advises farmers against joining a political movement; that politics are bad, and that all political efforts of the working classes and farmers have always come to naught. It even goes so far as to say that there is no use ever to form any new peo- ple’s movement in the United States, because’ never again will any new one succeed. In the other article it praiges the corporation men who have been put in charge of grain buy- ing and handling by the food admin- istration.—THE EDITOR. THINKS M’CUMBER SHOULD QUIT Clementsville, N. D Editor Nonpartisan Leader: In looking over the votes to amend the federal lank bank law I see our stalwart Porter J. McCumber thinks farmers with mortgages on their farms shouldn’t be allowed to borrow from the federal bank. Suppose Port had a few. farm mortgages drawing 10 per cent—wouldn‘t he be in favor of the federal bank taking them off his hands at 6 per cent? Think the ' farmers should have compassion on Port and make arrangements to have him set- . tle down to a quiet life in North Da- kota. It is altogether too strenuous a life for him at Washington, catering to the money trust and Big Business. J. MENZIES. GOT THE LAND SHARKS Elgin, N. D. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I am herewith enclosing you the front page of the Elgin Times on which I have red-penciled an article published for the benefit of the public. I am interested in the farmer's fight for his rights. I have fought for state- wide compulsory hail insurance ever since 1908 and am a member of the Nonpartisan league. FRANK T. LEMBKE. Mr. Lembke was formerly city attor- ney at Glen -Ullin, but is now living and practicing law at ‘Elgin, It was he who presented evidence to the fed- eral government regarding land fraud sharks, who were offering lands in Kentucky at 385 cents an acre to Northwestern farmers, which evidence resulted in their prosecution and con- ] fessions of fraud, according to a let- ter from the postotflce department ‘to Mr. Lembke; published in the Elgin Times.—THE EDITOR. 223 E:E:wfilent_ ' in the ‘world today.
