That’s the Spot BOLD and far-reaching plan to throttle the Nonpartisan league in Minnesota—at least to cripple and discredit it—is laid bare by the apparently unauthorized publication of the pro- ceedings of a supposedly secret meet- ing of politicians, representatives of Big Business and editors of news- papers at St. Paul recently. The Duluth Tribune, a representative of which evidently attended this re- markable gathering of anti-farmer forces at St. Paul prints a two-column account of the proceedings. This ac- count of the details which appears in no other paper, is evidently a “slip” by the Tribune, as those who called and conducted the meeting have succeeded, except for the Tribune account, in keeping under cover the real details of the plot against the League and the Minnesota farmers. TO USE “PATRIOTISM” TO CRUSH LEAGUE According to the Duluth Tribune, “business men, bankers, lawyers, man- ufacturers, newspaper representatives and publicists” took part in the meet- ing. The meeting was at the St. Paul hotel, the new palatial hostelry, and it decided op calling a big convention at St. Paul some time during Novem- ber. There is no claim that any farm- ers were present at the meeting. There could not have been, for, according to the Duluth paper’s report, the farmers were charged with almost every crime on the calendar, including the new ones “pro-Germanism,” ‘“disloyalty,” ‘trea- son,” etc. Without any hesitation, the Du- luth paper announces in effect that the proposed big convention to be . called in St. Paul is to masquerade as a “loyalty” meeting, but that its real purpose is to work up senti- ment against the League and the farmers. In other words, the Kept Press, Big Business and the poli- ticians of Minnesota intend to work up prejudice against the farmers' political and economic movement by prostituting the sacred cause of patriotism. The details of the plot thus divulg- ed are brutal, indicating an insane de- sire on the part of the powers-that-be in Minnesota to make out that Minne- sota and the farmers are traitors. The Tribune says that the men represented at the meeting at the St. Paul hotel “compared notes” and that these notes showed the following: SOME OF THE LIES THE MEETING HEARD “That the League contains hun- dreds of members who openly in- sult the flag and get away with it. “That the League is so strong in some counties that those who are loyal have to take their loyalty and express under cover their belief in the United States government. “Speeches were made (by those who attended the St. Paul hotel meeting) which showed that sedi- tion in some places is thriving and that to be known as loyal is almost as dangerous as it was for a man in the South to be known as Union after the ordinance of secession was adopted at Montgomery. “A number who spoke detailed personal experiences which showed whole communities to be almost solidly for the kaiser.” Big Business and the politicians of Minnesota have got to a point, as shown by these quotations of the re- port of their meeting at St. Paul, where, to win at the polls next year, they are willing and ready to blacken the reputation of farmers, and circulate the most base and false charges that could be born of fanaticism against the farmers and members of the League in the state. Think of charging that hundreds of loyal and patriotic Minnesota farmers who belong to the League insult the flag! Think of trying to make out that whole districts and counties in Minne- sota are solidly populated by traitors, simply hecause the League is strong in the state and because it is hoped by circulating these lies about Minnesota farmers the Nonpartisan league can be discredited! CONVENTION NOT TO TELL REAL OBJECT Note that at this secret meeting of the representatives of the Kept Press and Big Business, it was not entirely the officers of the League and its executive committee that is charged with treason, but that it is the people themselves—the farmers of the state. CONGRESSMEN GO HOME TO TALK TO PEOPLE Another measure of vital interest to farmers is the priority act, which en- larges the membership and scope of the Interstate Commerce commission, and amends the act to regulate com- merce by authorizing priority ship- ments by any common carrier. Space is lacking to mention all of the bills passed or acted upon since I arrived in Washington, but those I have touched upon seem of the most interest to the people of the West. Congress will probably return from the short vacation with a very strong front. Towards the last of the session there seemed to be a better organiza- tion among the progressives on both sides of the house towards a more eco- nomical expenditure of public funds. The congressmen have gone home to talk matters over with their constitu- ents, and I believe they will return with a better idea of what the people really want in regard to the vital mat- ters that are before the.country today. East Sees Need | of Organization The city people in recent years have been developing forums, in Buffalo, Baltimore, Boston, New York and else- where, and some 200 now exist. There is a National Council of Forums with headquarters in Boston, which holds an annual convention with delegates from all over the country. Through it the consumers’ forums and the farm- ers’ forums could develop mutual con- fidence and interest—another step to- ward bringing the farmer and the con- cumer closer together.
