$" " OATS AND WHEAT Since the fixing of government prices, wheat has fallen to a minor place in the grain 'handling trade, but oats has risen to prominence and is attracting the efforts and capital of traders in Minneapolis and Chicago. The government crop report out Sep- tember 7 showed a toal estimate for the year of 1,530,000,000 bushels as against an August estimate of only 1,450,000,000, and a yield last year of 14 251,000,000. Cash oats was strong as the Montana and North Dakota de- mand from the crop grown further east continued unabated. Heavy re- ceipts at terminals, however, were an jinfluence in keeping prices from soar- ing. & Week’s Wheat Recei ts Minneapolrs Duluth ] 1917 | 1916 | 1917 |1916 582 | 840 Monday ...eieveennnn 88 | 152 Tuesday 471 | 415 | 210 | 268 ‘Wednesday 384 | 481 | 104 |" 256 Thursday ..... .| 228 | 365 | 166 | 154 Friday .....ee0eeee. | 464 | 541 79 | 135 Totals .eeveevceans 12129 |2642 | 642 | 965 icago Omaha 1916 | 1917 [1916 Monday ...oevevenen 85 13 | 209 Tuesday 3 o8 158 4| 111 ‘Wednesday EHE 27 | 245 Thursday ... . 132 6| 112 Friday ...eiceeeeees.| 34 | 141 | 10 | 175 Totals ..... ...| 335 | 516 | 60 | 852 Se‘fiiémber Oats Minneapolis| Chicago High | Low | High | Low September 10 .| .58%| .57%| .595%| .583 September 11 .58 b7 .59% | .673% September 12 '.l .5814| .57% .59%4| .5814 September 13 .| .59 .581%| .60%%| .59 September 14 .60 .587%| .61%| .60 —_— % ] FLOUR ! Demand for flour increased con- sireably last week as did shipments. Harve.t in the spring what belt was yielding up heavy supplies of wheat for grinding, although the winter wheat belt supply was dwindling. Farmers have apparently adjusted themselves in a measure to the $2.17 top with differentials, and figure there would be no advantage in holding their grain. Mills report increasing suplies and predict no lack of all they will need. Alarming suggestions. of a pos- sible flour shortage in New York were tabooed last week by federal grain handling authorities. Corn was badly struck with frost in many sections of the country last week, especially in the Northwest, but the government crop report out Sep- tember 7 still rated the nation’s pro- duction at 3,250,000,000 bushels, which exceeds the record breaking estimate of August. In some states frost and drouth had played havoc in recent 'weeks and this was reflected in the estimate. Corn futures at Chicago were in high favor and cash corn showed all the strength of distilling days, when the whiskey makers were biddinz high to take it out of the food channels. The quality was not improved be- yond that of previous weeks, and the Kattle run of late has been showing jnore and more grassy stuff; but the evident draining of resources appar- ently had enough influence to save sellers from heavy slashing in prices. ‘With the advance of fall the serious- ness of lack of pasture and the im- pending shortage of feed increasing the gancy top prices on a few selected corn Mention Leader when writing advertisers fed steers have hardly showed up at all in recent weeks, and the cases where it did were confined to individ- uals rather than bunches, Hogs continued on the high levels, hovering arounq $18; sheep were nup above $16 for the best lambs; butcher steers ranging from $7 to $8.50; and heifers about $1 less, with veal calves running from $11 to $12 and a few well fattened ones around $14.25. i Butcher Cows and Heifers t.
