RADIATORS REPAIRED ((’r'((,u/ I I (From the Iliff, Colo., Independent) Of course it had to come, but it ar- | rived a little sooner than might have | been expected. The profiteers just simply could not stand it to see a nonpartisan organiza- tion of farmers in Colorado, who pro- pose to take a part in politics. Too many well laid plans would go glim- mering if such an organization should become powerful. And so, the press of the profiteers has unlimbered its guns. Innuendo, abuse and deliberate falsification constitute the- ammunition of the profiteers. Hcre is a sample of the argument. “The men who are urging this or- ganization discredit it to start with. They care about as much for the welfare of the farmer as the Kaiser cares for the welfare of the innocent people or a ship which his submarines sink in mid-ocean.” Two specific indictments are made; first, that in North Dakota and Minne- sota the organization is pro-German and second, that its purpose in Colo- Who's a Who is a traitor? According to some of them, any one that cries out against the monstrous wrongs fasten- ed upon the people by this adminstra- tion is a traitor. Now, in the first place, no organiza- tion can or ought to succeed at the present time unless its objects and purposes are intensely and actively pa- triotic. If the Nonpartisan league does not measure up to this standard, its existence will be brief and pointless and its enemies need waste no.time in hastening its demise. In the second place, the political aspirations of one man are not a suffi- cient foundation on which to build any statewide organization and no such at- tempt would get far. The gist of the matter is that the ‘press of the profiteers knows perfectly well that it is telling a baldfaced lie when it declares that the men who are organizing the League are not farmers. 1t is equally as well aware that its other charges are without foundation in fact. The plain truth is that the profiteers see in this Nonpartisan movement a serious menace to their unlawful prac- tices and unholy profits. Humanity ‘will for all time probably regard George Washington as a patriot to humanity, .and King George as the traitor. Judged by the standards of national individualism as the present system teaches, Washington was a traitor because he took up arms against his king and country. He should have been loyal—“My country right -or wrong.” But his was the greater patriotism and he took up arms against his country because it was wrong. We have little sympathy for violent methods.
