Dalily News) The state of Minnesota is being en- tertained by a house committee in- vestigating grain markets.* Chairman A. F. Teigen conducts the hearing in a manner which seems to please himself and the opponents of the Equity move- ment. When this committee was appointed it was said that investigations of all grain exchanges in Minnesota would be made, including the Minneapolis chamber of commerce, the largest and most powerful of all. Farmers throughout the entire Northwest have long complained of unfair market methods. They have charged that the grain market was uned” against them and in favor of grain speculators. They have charged that they were robbed by the grain in- spection system, terminal elevator doc- toring and fixing and by gambling done on the floor of the chamber of commerce. Thousands of farmers organized their own grain exchange and placed it in St. Paul—the Equity. To this ex- change they have been shipping their grain in ever-increasing quantities. The Equity Co-operative Grain ex- change has placed St. Paul upon the grain market map. Also it is the only OPEN GRAIN MARKET in the United States. There have been charges of bad business management ‘made against Equity officials. The major portion of these charges have been traced to chamber of commerce sources and others to disgruntled former employes. Equify men have made mistakes. If they hadn't they+would be too perfect for this world. But these mistakes are material for investigation by stock- holders of that organization. If they are dissatisfied with their officers let them make the change. The people of Minnesota infinitely are more interested in obtaining a square and fair deal for all grain growers. There is no easier way to crush opposition to grain speculation than by destroying Equity. Thus far the Teigen committee has displayed a greater interest in money Equity has spent for pens, pencils and stationery than it has about chamber of commerce methods of controlling grain prices. It has turned itself into an Equity heckler.,, It is-straining at the gnat of Equity mistakes and pleasantly swallowing the old-style methods which take millions of dollars ::mnually out of the pockethook of | Northwest farmers. Out in North Dakota the farmers got tired of “investigations” and such | things. They went into politics with a | program. | nesota_also have started to do. This the farmers of Min- A report of the Teigen committee condemning Iquity because it made mistakes and permitting the chamber, of commerce to escape with a mere slap on ‘the wrist will make it much easier for the Nonpartisan farmers of Minnesota to dictate legislation in the next house and senate. The committee is about ready to finish its hearings. It now hasn’t time —even if it possessed the inclination— to investigate either the Minneapolis or Duluth grain exchanges. That sort of an investigation isn't worth the ink used to print it, SOUTH DAKOTANS ENTHUSIASTIC Florence, S. D., April 5, 1917 Editor Nonpartisan Leader: The meeting at Florence, S. D., April 4 was a success. There were about 250 farmers in attendance and they sure are with and for the League. Mr. Evans handled the subject to the satisfaction of all The meeting at Wallace the follow- ing day was just as good and we want to thank the Leader and its staff, also- the farmers of North Dakota for help- ing us put this movement over in South Dalkota. : ABE ROBB. ADMIRES “JUDGE YOUNG’S SPIEL" Newark, S. D., March 24, 1917. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: : That was certainly ‘'some spiel of Judge Young's in the last Leader. He is greatly grieved about the farmer's $16.00 under false pretenses. Wonder if the Bismarck Tribune taking the the railroad attorney’s $13.00 per 1000 for pamphlets is “false pretense.” The rube legislature should have appro- priated $500,000 for the penitentiary if the private citizen pamphlet distribu- ter is going to have a hundred there. Wonder how many railroad attorneys should be there? I think it'is a .safe bet that when the hundred rubes land in the pen the first thing they would say is “Hello Young.” —FRANK STEWART.
