§ T AT R T e " ducted most fairly. ad opportunity for full discussion . THIRTY THE NONPARTISAN LEADER For State Auditor C. R. KOSITZKY. C. R. Kositzky, the League’s can- didate for state-auditor, is well-known throughout the state as one of the arch enemies ‘of the political gang that has so long fattened at the pub- lic crib. As treasurer of Burleigh county he carried on a long and suc- cessful fight against privilege and graft, many of his fights heing.carried to a successful conclusion in the courts. Among other things he stop- ped- the practice of a certain favored few letting their taxes go delinquent and escaping penalty as provided by law when they paid them. He saw to it that the rich and influential who had previously kept their property from being sold for unpaid taxes had the same treatment as farmers and others. Mr. Kositzky was born at Yankton, S. D., April 7, 1876, of German par- entage His father and mother had come to America from Germany in the early 70s; Neleigh college at Neleigh, Neb., and at the University of Nebraska. He came to North Dakota in April, 1901, and settled on-a"farm south of Sterl- A ing in Burleigh county. In 1902 he married Estelle Gaskill, a Sterling girl, and they have three boys and two girls. ; In 1908 Mr. Kosxtzky was clected county treasurer of Burleigh county and reelected two-years later, in both instances his vote coming practically from the rural districts. He got lit- tle support in Bismarck.” In 1912 he was elected county commissioner, a position he still holds, his term expir- ing at the end of this year: “In April, 1913, he was made secretary of the state tax commission and still holds that job. - It is characteristic of Mr. Kositzky that he refuses to accept two salaries though holding two public jobs. As NAMED BEST MEN. H. C. Westby, regularly elected delegate to the state convention of the League which indorsed candidates for office, is a type of the substantial farmers who have helped to build this great organization and who are standing back of it to the finish. Mr. ‘Westby farms three quarter sections near Maddock in Benson county and represented the 20th district in the state convention, He has been in the state 18 years, worked in a bank at Maddock two years and was postmas- ter of that town eight years. He is H. C. Westby. an Equity man and a family man, having a wife, three boys and three girls.. He finished his education at the Decorah (Iowa) college. . “I believe we indorsed the best men ossxble for governor and state offices. e indorsing convention was con- Every delegate and voted on candidates for office as ‘ he saw fit,” said Mr. Westby. school of hard: M, P. JOHNSON. This is Johnson of Tolley, known all over North Dakota.as the aggres- sive president of the North Dakota union of the "American- Society of Equity. He has been indorsed by the League for member of the state rail- road commission, the body which has the supervision of state- elevators, an authority excedingly important to the farmers of a wheat state. He is pre- sident of the Equity company which operates the farmers’ elevator at Tol- ley, one of the most successful far- mers’ elevators in the state. M. P. Johnson. born in Iowa in July,. 1873, and came to North Dakota:in 1899, < He has a family of a wife and tHree girls. Be- - fore commg to'North Dakota he com- ple a ‘common s¢hool education and took a business-course in the Up- per Iowa Umversxty at Fayette, but - according to’his owh aceount: ‘he ob- tained most of :his- edueam in. the knocks:f He was educated at He was county commissioner he is entitled to $5.00 a day for every day he is in attendance on board meetings or doing county work connected with his office. But he subtracts what he receives for this from his salary as secretary of the tax commission and accepts only the difference from the state. Many efforts have been made to “get” Mr. Kositzky. Once while he was treasurer the gang tried to catch him short in his cash. They sent an old friend of Kositzky’s to plead for a personal loan for a few days. They knew Kositzky was a poor man and didn’t have the money. The “old friend” pleaded with him to let him have it out of the till in the treasurer’s office until the next. day, when he would come in and pay This was at the closing hour at the office. Kositzky refused to loan the man the county’s money. Early next morning on the opening of the office the county commissioners marched in and demanded to be allow- ed to count the county’s cash and check up the treasurer’s books. They thought the loan had been made as prearranged and that they would find the''cash drawer short. At another time when Kositzky’s wife was ill he shipped in a gallon of alcohol on the doctor’s orders to give. his wife alcohol baths. Some of the gang heard of it and sent some other “old friends” to-Kositzky to attempt +to buy some of this alcohol from him, giving excuses of illness to get the liquor, but Kositzky refused. “I knew if I had sold an ounce of that alcohol I would have been ar- rested for bootlegging,” said Kositz- ky. “I had to watch for traps like this all the time I was treasurer. They were determined to ‘get’ me by hook or crook, but they never did.” Paid Advertisement LAST CALL For Good Government Only 2¢ JULIUS KLEMIN TUTTLE, N. D.
