P — THE PUBLIC REALTH. sl THE LARGZLY INCREASED MORTALITY OF LAST WEEE —PROGRES3 OF THE CHUOLERA—SIX NEW CASHS SINCE OUR LAST REPORT—THREE FATAL Wo learn, from the Burcau of Vital Statistics, that during the week ending at 2 p. m, last Saturday, 827 deaths oc- carred in the City of Now-York, beiug au increase of 334 as compared with the previons weck. The details of tlis increase aro not yei kuown, but, with the exception of 44 cases of sun- stroke, the excessive mortality of the past week is chargeable 10 diarrheal discases, The localities which are the most crowled, where cleanliness is almost unknown, and whose at- mosphere contains the greatest amount of organic matter, are those in which the increase took place, The mortality of the week ending July 7 was equivalent to an annual deatl-rate of 3.2 to the 1,000 iuliabitants; that of the week ending oo the 14th was equivalent to au annual death-rate of 59.20 to the 1,000, This immense iucrease ia the mortality of the city may be said to arise from the inereased putrefaction of animal mat- ter, and s an indication of the means to be employed during the coming week to arrest decomposition. Unfortunately, narchy in it ths oy recentl; bis enem s of diarrheal dlseases propagate themselves, aud the deatl-rate of Inst week will occur again unless the causes are econtrolled. Weare not sure that 820,000, expended by the Board of Health in disinfecting agents to be used iu the diarrheal dis- triets, will reduce the death-rate of the current week to the average; but we have no doubt that the mortality will be ma- terially diminished by this method of treating the unwholesome slums of the Egst side, fiom which death, during the past week, reaped #o rich & Lorvest. The principal district to which this increased mortality is chargeable is bounded Ly Grand and Fourteenti-sts., Bowery and tho East River. It is inbabited by a class which is nuclean, and includes many of tLose fover-nests so common in all overcrowded tenant house Boside 249 deaths from disrrhesl diseases, there were 78 deaths directly caused by the beat, 44 from insolation, f the week, together with the letter of tbe Registrar of Records upou the causes that produced this somewhat unpre- cedented increase. THE CHOLERA. Notwithstanding all these deaths from diarrbeal discases, cholern, we believe, had but 11 victims; but we commence the weck with six cases, of which three bave proved fatal. On Satarday an unkuown woman died at No. 103 Cherry- Ste was one of those women so numerous in all large cities, who | live friondless and die uncared for, After lying ia the sun all day, she was taken in the eveaing to the Potter's field of the metropolis by the Comm! ioners of Charities and Correction.
