FINANCIAL AND. COMMERCLAL The Stock Market’ Active and Strong. MONEY ON CALL 6 A 7 PER CENT. Govemment Bonds Strong, States Dull and Railroads Higher. WALL Fama, March ;. Aprominent speculative firm, well known in Stock hange circles and thoroughly appreciative of the fact that the spectre of tight money is more imagina- Aive than real, were in a general way huyers of the whole market to-day, and in a special way buyers of ‘the Northwesterns, particularly of Northwest com- mon, which was the shining light of the day and attracted the swarm of speculative moths who were ‘willing to risk asingeing of wings provided there was ‘@ corresponding promise of profits. It it be true, as ‘street rumor has it, that nothing more is intended ‘than a swirl upward of two or throe per cent no particular harm nor advantage will come to either bulls or bears. If it be the inten- jtion to start the Northwesterns as the pioncers of a ‘ull movement it is likely that the market may ex- hibit a plenitude of sore-headed bears before Easter, simply because the entire list is only waiting for an Basurance of money to be made permanently casy fo regain what it has lost and advance toa much higher standard of values than it has yet attained. Phere was no lot up in the call rates for money fo-day, but the market:rose, nevertheless, and closed ‘with noticeable firmness, the trepidation as to a Bqueeze in loanable funds having disappeared almost entirely from the minds of stock borrowers. With wnuch confidence, therefore, in the future of prices, and nothing to disfurb their firmness at present ex- wept the spectre of tight money, and withal with wery pronounced strength, the murket closed to-night. 1. Fatwa, March 28—6 P, M. Business has been pretty brisk in most quarters, the market showing good deal of strength and full prices being realized for almost every description of ‘merchandise, Business men are in some instances rendered uneasy by the Congressional battle now raging, but where right is so evidently all on one side and wrong ali on the other apprehension is unlikely to become general or the business affairs of the country seriously disorganized. It is a reassuring fact that despite this disturbing clement business steadily on the increase. With « good demand for dry goods everywhere, and with the currency ot the country established om the solid and safe foundation of gold, business mem have little to fear in the near future. With the administration: materially op, posed to sot money and the face of the whole mercantile public sot against it, any sudden change is almost impos- sible, Hence, with this fact generally recognized, busi- ness is on the steady increase, In some quarters there is a Jull, but it is only reactionary, succeeding an active move- mont, as in breadstaffs, which have, perhaps, been carried along too rapidly by the current of speculation, which has been running so swiftly here and at the West along back. Daring the week past a good business has been done in all theprincipal articles of merchandise, at full prices.
