A fashionable audience, and one of the largest of the season, nuceived it enthusiastically, and the principal artists were many times recalled to respond to the applanse which they elicited. ‘The music is uneven in its attractiveness, but there aro many passages in whieh the grandeur and force of the great composer alternate with a certain mel_ ancholy ‘expression and a grace and elegance that lend a charm to the performance. In the first act the duo between Corentino and Dinorah was a prominent feature of the evening, the sine tenor of Frapolli and the superb soprano of Gerster producing an effect that has not often ben excelled on the ‘stage of the Academy, It wis in the shadow aria, however, above referred to, that Mme. Gerster exhibited her wonderfal ability in florid execution, and carohing like a bird, added another to the many artistie tri- h she has achieved, Signor Galassi as in admirable yoiee and sang and acted = with much spirit, especially in the “Dio Sei Vendicata Assai,’” Signor Tecchi. was ‘warmly encored after rendering Matura Son la Spiche.”* the song of, the reaper ki careful ‘The chorw wise showed the result of training. ‘‘Santa Maria,” as given by them, was one of the most exquisite numbers of the evening. ‘The opera was mounted with the usual ood taste that characterizes ihe manage- ment, and at the close the curtain dropped on ascene of picturesque'beauty, in which were blended a rieh- ness of color and wealth of vocal effect that ulone might have sufficed to stamp “‘Dinorah” as an ar- listic success, ' MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC NOTE! ‘Miss Marion Talbot will appear in recitations this (Saturday) evening at Chickering Hall. She will be assisted by Mr. Gedrge Morgan, Miss Maude Morgan and Signor Farranti. Lord Dunmore brought out a wedding march at the Opera, London, composed in honor of the marriage of the Duke of Connaught. He led the orchestra him- self, and the march was pronounced a success. A special matinée will be given to-day at the St. James Theatre for the accommodation of ladies who have expressed a desire to see the Count Joannes as Lord Dundreary. No gentleman will be admitted unless accompanied by a lady, and thus good order will be secured. Yo-night's performance will conclude the third week's run of the “Scrap of Paper” at Wallack’s, and the desire to sce it seems to be rather increasing than diminishing. Indeed, the management expect that it will run for the greater part of the balance of the season. The matinées have been especially well attended. ‘The Midgets—Miss Lucia Zarato and General Mite— continue to draw immense audiences at Masonic Temple, Twenty-third street and Sixth avenue, and to accommodate the large number of visitors it is thought three performances a day will haye to bo given. This morning a special reception will be held from ten to twelve o'clock, in addition to the usual Feceptions. Tho inaugural festival to celebrate the 315th anni- versary of Shakespeare's \birth will commence at Stratford-on-Avon on- Wednesday, April 23, when there will be a collation at the Town Hall at three P, M., at which the Mayor will presid®. After tho col- lation the report of the governors of the Memorial Association will be read. ‘The first performance will take place in the Memorial ‘Theatre at seven o'clock the same evening, when will bo produced Shake- speare’scomedy of “Much Ado About Nothing.” Pre- ‘vious to the performance a deiicatory address, writ- ten by Dr. Westland Marston, will be recited by Miss Kate Field. Hantronp, Conn., March 28, 1879, ‘The wanderings of Governor Hubbard's daughter ‘nd her husband keep alive the local excitement. Up to this evening no message has been: received by either the family. of the bride or the family of the bridegroom; and the further report that negotiations had been opened for the return of the couple is wholly un- founded, Governor Hubbard is obdurate and will not listen t. any proposition of that character. Tne belief that the couple at first sought a place of refuge in New York is generally. accepted as correct, and a slight ripple of sensation was created here to-night by a report that they had been seen in Montreal snd intended to extend ‘their journey. But for the indefatigable cfforts of the firemen it would have proved a -very destrue- tive conflagration. At the first discovery of the flames the firemen promptly responded, but notwithstanding their efforts the fire spread rapidly and drove the firemen who had located them- selves on the stairs in the hallway, to tho street.
