8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Fairly Ac- tive and Weak. MONEY ON CALL 7 A 2 A 4 PER CENT. Government Bonds Quiet, States Dull and Railroads Irregular. eerie Monpay, March 24—6 P. M. ‘The real demand for money at 6 to7 per cent to- day and the possibility that.even higher rates might be demanded in the future tended to dwarf business and render the Stock Exchange barren of. interest. Dealings were few, fluctuations feeble and anything of a public interest utterly unworthy of attention. It is conceded that tight moneys might get holders of stocks into a tight place, and under an apprehen- sion of this sort they have been free sellers, The reservation must be made, however, that the selling movement has been upon the part gf small traders, ‘There is no evidence that the great operators have parted with their stocks or mean to do.so, Trading has been done “en detail” rather than ‘‘en gros,” and to the lesser speculators is left the responsibility of getting out of the market at a profit or at a loss, Despite the prevailing heaviness and the tendency to lower prices there remains back of all a thorough be- lief in higher values to come. It is unfortunately true that somo of the best of the bulls are afflicted with the slimmest of margins, and the fiat of their broker: makes them sellers, whether they will or not. Con- sequently there is a constant ooze of such stock upon the market, and it in a measure weighs dowi prices, In addition, there are holders of stocks who could keop them if they would; but they won’t. They argue that money is likely to remain in demand for a couple of weeks to come, that stocks will tend downward by their own weight during that time and that previous holders will be able to recoup their holdings at lower prices and ata saving of interest. Consequently, stocks are sold and the market takes them—at reduced prices. However bullish operators may be “‘in’ futuro” they are not so at present, and the inclination exists to pass stocks along from one bull to another—as fire buckets were passed from hand to hand in early days—until the burning shame of a tight money market shall have been ex- tinguished, As a matter of fact there is no disposi- ‘tion to bear the market. Sales of long stock are for account of weak holders who trade upon the pos- sibility of Lower prices and the certainty of a saving of interest. Their intention is, however, to buy in again when the money market eases, and until that time are Qestined to stand like so many “Sister Anns” upom the tower of observation watching for the fayorabde turn to come. That this turn will come when the present money agitation has been set ‘at rest seems to be certain. It remains for the long sighted speculator to get a profitable glimpse of its approach. ‘The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at the New York Stock Exchange to-day were as follows:— pening.
