FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL —_—_—e The Stock Market Active and Lower. Government Bonds Quiet States Strong and Railroads Higher. Money on Call Easy at 11-2 a 8 Per Cent, s Want Stneer, } Wepwespay, Feb, 12—6 P. M. As was advised by Mrs. Chicks (who niay be re- membered as the sister of the immortsl Dombey), Mr. Gould “made an effort’ on the market to-day, snd‘it is pretty cortsin that Mr. Vanderbilt did so likewise, This effort was directed to selling Lake Bhore freely, and the result was to reduce the price by about one and one-half per cent. In a sympa thetic way it did more, for it carried the rest of the list down with it, so powerful is the force of a bad example. By some hook or by crook the fortunes of Lake Shore were mixed up with thone of Erie, Given the ingredients of » popular beverage, and scarcely 9 board broker would fail of a recipe for their proper incorporation. Given the interests of these two rail- roads to mix into s stimulant of business, as they were given, and scarcely a broker knew why they were mixed or why they affected the market, The solution lies ‘this wise:—Shortly after midday a telegram from London announced that the propositions offered by President Jewett, of the Eric road, for a iease of the Atlantic and Great Western Une, had been accepted by the latter company, with the stipulation that the former corporation should gUarantes the interest upon $7,000,000 of the Atlantic and Great Western bonds and share and share alike in the carnings of the latter line. It is quite possible that such a leaso has becn made, though the guaran- tee item is more than problematical. The immediate effect, however, of tho news was to advance Eric and depress Lake Shore, under some vague notion that a serious opposition would be developed antagonistic to the latter property. Except that the control by Erie of Atlantic and Great Western may possibly cheapen treights a fraction it is dificult ¢o see how the existing situation is altered, since the Erie connec- tions are now made and have been made for a long time back over the Atlantic and Great Western and Fort Wayne roads into Chicago, and are not likely to be benefited or injured, lease or no lease. The re port was sufficient, however, to invite extensive sales of Lake Shore, either upon the part of Mr. Vanderbilt (which seems probable from the magnitude of the orders) or from Mr. Gould, from pure cantankerous- ness and a keen appreciation of the situstion. At any rate the lease, if there be any truth in it, does not appear to offer any greater competition with the Lake Shore road than has existed heretofore. It is quite possible that the whole matter is a put up job, in the McHenry interest, and with an syo solely to speculation. With the rest of the market the grangers were inclined to weakness, though the défe noir of “a freight reduc Hon” bill was to-dey referred back by the Wisconsin Legislature to the Railroad Committee with a recom- mendation to indefinitely postpone the same. The preferred stockholders éf the Quicksilver Mining Company have for tho fourth time obtained a ver- dict in their fayor through the decision of Judge Dykman, sitting in the Supreme Court, in Brooklyn. A final recourse will be had to the Court of Appeals, when this much vexed matter will be settled for good and all, The company is stated to be in excellent condition, owing but $275,000 of its old bonded debt ‘nd having a surplus of nearly $1,000,000 on hand and free from flosting debt. .
