A SUPPLEMENTARY STATEMENT. ‘The above statement was regarded by the Attorney General and his advisers as insufe ficient and as bearing on {ts face evidence that it was not the full and frank confession as to his accomplices in erime, which Tweed had promised in his well known letters of supplication to Mr. Charles O’Conor, Mr. ‘Tweed hearing this fact supplemented his first confession by a* second paper, which is as follows :— KRIE RAILWAY AND MR, TWERD'S OCONNROTION TRBRE , wits, Tp 1868 be thinks Mr. Tweed was brought inte rela- tions with Mr. Jay Gould by Mr. Hugh Hastings at the Delavan House, io Albany. During the session of the Legislature of 1868 Mr. Tweod bad no business comsec- tion with Mr, Goald, but, on the contrary, in behalf of the New Yerk Central roud, Mr. Tweed had opposed his measures, After the adjournment of the Legislature Mr. Gould asked permission to bring Mr, Fisk 19 contact with Mr, Tweed, and did bring him to Mr. Tweed’s office, in the Street Commis sioner's office, Mr. Twegd being then Deputy Street Commissioner. Shortly thereatter Mr, Tweed intro. duced Messrs, Gould and Fisk to Mr, Sweeny, whe bad been appointed receiver of the Erie Ratlway contrary to their wishes, In order to agaia obtain control of the road en arrangement was made by which Mr. Sweeny was to re ceive, ard did receive, $150,000 tor his fees, which amount was divided in equal parts between Sweeny, Hugh Smith and Mr.-Twoed. From that time ail legis- lation desired by the Erie road was obtained by Mr. Tweed, and mooey expended for such purposes was defrayed by Gould and Fisk and disbursed by Mr, ‘Tweed, Mr. Barber and Mr. Van Vechten under Mr. Tweed’s direction, Mr, Tweed says thet many bundred thousand dollars were expended ia that way, It i impossible, confined as be ls, and without access to references and indi- viduals, tor Mr, Tweed to recall apy special acts of legislation in their peball, except amendments to the Code in the session of 1871, be thinks relative to libel, which Mr. Tweed bas before referred to iu having paid Senator James Wood $6,000 for bis report on the Conferéace Committee, In consideration for these services of Mr. Tweed, Mr. Tweed, Mr. Swoony and Mr. Hugh Smith were made directors of the road, although they owned no stock, and were given privileges in stock and otber operations. Mr. Tweed also brought Fisk in communt- cation with Judge Barnard, who therealter granted them all the judicial aid they required. Mesera, Fisk and Gould contribated handsomely to all election funds when requested so to do by the Ring, and aided them all tbat it was in their power to do, in connec tion with thelr road, to advance their political inier- esta, NRW YORK CENTRAL ROAD. Mr, Tweed says that io 1868, as he thinks, when the Qreat rivalry betweon the Central and Erie was masi- fosted in the Legislature, Mr. Tweed was paid by and espoused the side of the New Yorg Central, and was authorized by John Duteher, tormorly Senator and then recogaized agent of that road in Albany, to procure by purchase, if necessary, the votes of Sepators for the Central Railroad interest.
