THE COURTS. Qualifications of Jurors in Sav- ings Bank Trials. A FEMALE SMUGGLER’S SURRENDER. | Judge Barrett Lecturing Improvident Receivers. {INDICTMENTS IN UNITED STATES COURTS. The trial of one of two suits begun by Isaac V. French, receiver of the Central Park Savings Bauk, against Thomas Goarty, the President, ana the direc- tors of the bank, reported in the Hknatp of yesterday, was commenced before Judge Donobue and a jury in Part 1 of the Supreme Court yesterday, Considerable time was expended in the selection of jurors, those called being questioned by both siaea very carefully ae to what were their relations to and feelings and senti- ments regarding savings banks and their officers and the manner in which the one should be conducted and the others held responsible, Tne coungel for plaintift were anxious to know from those called if they were officers or clerks of any savings bank, if they had rela- tions who were such, or if they were per- sonally acquainted with the defendants, Equally earnest in inquiring were the defendants’ counsel as to whether the cundidates lor # seat in the box bad any money deposited in savings banks, if their {riends bad any, or if they or their friends had ever lost any- thing by such banks. 1t was further desired to know of them If u mere deficiency of assets would raise the Berpeice 1B their minds that the officers of the nk had been guilty of such negligence as to make them personally liable, Some replied thas where there cy of assets their first impression would officers were ut fault; others said they officers liable if the rose neglect or care- only the consequences ould be visited upon them, Some Were challenged peremptorily by the defence and or- dered to stand aside, but twelve wore at last ound who were deemed sufliciently fair-minaed to ass upon the facts, allowing the Court to stract them as to the legal Tesponsi- bility of the defendants, and they wore accepted. The case was then opened by Mr. Peter B. Olney on the ntifl, who detailed the facts on which HERALD in connection . of the bank, but may be stated generally to the effect that the President and bank had violated ¢! estate beyoud both tn: its means, and that the lo u caused by such investment should be charged against ‘bem personally, Witnesses were then sworn and the trial proceeded, the testimony up to the hour of ad- journment developing nothing of importance outside of that already made public in relation to the affairs of thig badly broken bank. The defence to be presented is that the lot needed for the purposes of the bank building could not be obtained without purchi one conveyance th adjoining it, and that wi done was done and med for the best interests of the bank the time and substantially in conformity with law. The case will be continued to-day. A FEMALE SMUGGLER. A case of smuggling over the Canadian border into ‘the United States, in which the accused is a woman, came up before Commissioner Shields yesterday. It Appeared from the papers in the case that on the 23d Of last January Mrs, Clara B. PLUCKING CLEAN. In asuilt brought by R. J. Tollis against ¢) @io: Gas Machine Company Danforth K. Olney was appointed receiver, and when bis accounts were pre- pared they were referred to Albert Stickey to pass them and report thereon. The referee reported that the receiver and his counsel, A. H. Amidown, ap- peared berore him, out he did not find that any notice had been given to creditors, nor did any such appear. He recommended a fee of $560 for the counsel. The receiver's accounts, accompanied by tho report of the referee, Were submitted to Judge Barrett for bis ap- proval, He yesterday declined to do go, giv- ing bis reasons thereior as follows:—‘*l decline to pass the receiver's accounts or to discharge him. He was appointed in @ suit in which the company ap- peared, vut interposed no defence. He employed the company’s attorney, and hus paid out to such attorney a large part of the iund, and pow asks to pay nearly the entire balance in his bauds to the same attor: He creaits himself with numerous journeys to New York and elsewhere. Before Recorder Hackett MISTAKEN IDENTITY. Fritz Engelking, of No. 152 Bleecker street, was charged by Salvator Missita, an Italian, with having, on the night of April 14, cut him with a razor, at the corner of Bleecker and Thompson streets, with intent tokillhim, The complainant and his friend testified that there was a fight, and that the complainant came out badly damaged. Mr. John U. Mott, counsel tor the prisuner, placed the latter upon the witness stand and proved thas at the time of the alleged figut he was in bed at the store of his employer, Mr. George Kosen- treter, No. 152 Bleecker street, who corroborated the mers statement, er witnes testifying to me fact the Recorder directed jury to acquit the prisoner, and he was thereupon discharged. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED ROBBERY. A young man named William A.
