8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Less Active and Without Special Feature. GOLD 107 1-8 A 106 7-8. Government Stocks Weak and Railroad Bonds Higher. Money on Call Easy at 2 a 2 1-2 Per Cent. Wau. Sraxet, Tumspar, slay 8—6 P. M. To-day was another practice day on ‘Change, when stocks were tossed from band te hand as @ ball is among cricketers in the intervals of agame, There was no steady purpose to put the market either up or sellers or Duyers predominated at the moment, A desire to realize profits on the part of the “bow window’? peo- ple was guessed at by the room, and figures yielded once and again under the operation, Lut the pro- nounced strength of Lake Shore ana Western Union weil in band and prevented a scare from rupning away with the market. ‘be popular super- slition is that, beside the considerable lots of Lake Shore taken up and paid for, the party from the Pacific bas obtained control of some 20,000 shares pur- me amount, and itis argued that this fact, if fact it be, indicates a furtber advance in the stock, At the moment the property down, so prices leaned one way or the other, wept pric chased against calls sold for the looks as though it might take care of itself without extrancous props from the Pacific or auy other slope. Western Union, with its usual contrarioty, 1s again bothering both friends and foes. Alternately strong aud weak, its condition is as feverish as a case of ter- tan ague, and stockjobbing doctors disagree as to whether it should be treated with the stimulants of purchases or the depletion of sales, To-day it had the fit again strong upon it, being at one time at the head of the market in point of stability, and finally bring- ing up the rear in point of weakness, ‘The only mat- ter of general interest which occurred to vary the monotonous gamble of the Board room lay in the appual meeting of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. With the exception of Mr. L, P. Morton, who assumes the placo of Mr. W. J. Hoppin, the former board of ollicers and directors was re- elected. Mr. Dickson, the Presivent, was understood to state that the condition of the company bad not matenally changed from that presented in the January report, and was as good as could be expectea under the circainstauces of the times. A general reduction bad been made in expen. nd a small profit was being made out of their business, Much of their trouble was to be imputed to the machinations of the wicked bears, who endeavored to eat up the company, as their prototypes had devoured the bad boys in Scriptural times, and the officers were commended for their zeal in the bear hunt which had been instituted. On inquiry Mr, Dickson stated that the coal lands wero mortgaged for $1,000,000, but that the security was worth $5,000,000, and ho iurther corrected the impres- sion as to the loss by the Canada line by stating that the deficit had been $150,000, instead of $500,000, as reported, After some other facts, freely given, the meeting adjourned, well pleased with the property and themselves. The adjourned meeting of Board mem- bers in respect to the commission law was heid to-aay Mt three o’clock. About one-balt the 200 members who lost their temper on Saturday bad apparently found it, tor they failed to put im an appearance to- day. This corporal’s guard contented themselves with recommending to the Governing Committee a restora- tion of tha old one-thisty-two rate for dealings be- tween members and then adjourned. AL MISSTO IMPORTANT TO TAXPAYERS; interview, Comptroller Kelly gives notice that taxpayers have only a few days left to avail themselves of the act of the Legislature in 1876, which allows the payment of taxes 10 arrears with interest althe rate of seven per cent per annum. This pares expires op the 16th of the present month, and after that date twolve per cent will be charged under the old statute relating to taxes in arrears. Many persons who have hitherto neglected to pay their taxes with the reduced rate of interest are now availing themselves of the privilege.
