FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Active and Fluctuating. GOLD 107 A 107 5-8 A 107 1-2. Sovernment Stocks figher aud Railroad Bonds Irregular, MONEY ON CALL 2 1-2 A 4 PER CENT. WALL Srrxer, Moypay, April 16—6 P.M, } Foreign bourses are in trepidation, rentes and con- tole weakon, breadswufls advance in home and foreign markets and gold stiffens up to 107% in our own Ex. change, All this because the foreign war news comes more and more threatening, and that Russia soems de- termined to knock the chip of controversy off the Turkish shoulder. Nevertheless the values of the trunk raiiruads (as exprexsod in Stock Exchange quo- tations) refuse to respond, although as the great prod- ace carriers of the country they shoula benefit by the increused traMe naturally thrown in their way. Europe at war, in contrast with America at peace, sug- gests tho appheation ot the old saying which «firms that ‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison,’’ and popular opinion declares thut in the eveat of a Conti- nental embroilment tho United States will not be the ‘other mian.’? So far the Stock Exchange is slow to appreciate the prom- ised advantages; at least, there ts no practicable demonstration that way in a craving for railway stocks, Thero appears to be no snenking kindness tor Belloua, and nothing but a deaf eur turned to the encouraging potes of her fap-far and rataplan. So we have bad a market to-day which has barred out all influences from without and has developed none within, Under these circumstauces there has resulted a condition of mild fluctuations, pulsating like peas in a shovel, with & good deal of crackling, but with no result worth speaking of, Although the early prices wero well Sustained an uneagy feeling prevailed, lest the serious decline of last week should have proved disastrous to housea that were believed to be curryivg long lines of stocks. This impression took practical shape in a eelling movement which was fo- mented by the anvouncement of one small fail- ure and rumors of embarrassments in other houses, but as tho day grew older and nothing of the sort was developed prices strengthened and closed up with a fair degree of firmness, Although itis highly probable that moro than one concern has been helped out of a tight place it speaks well for the stability of the Board that no important firm, except that of Keunedy & Co., has come to actual grief, In this connection we note sales at auction to-day of 1,350 shares of Rock Island at 873g, 4,400 shares of Northwestern at 164 and 130 sbures preferred do, at 4144, which were un- doubtedty collaterals held against joaus made to the above house or its chents. The Rock Istana Company have clected Hugh Riddle President, vice Trasy, re- signed, and placed David H. Dows in the Vice Presi- dent’s chair, No action appears to have teon taken, however, in regard to Jay Gould, though, in the light of past events, it is not probable that ho has been in- trusted with the keys of the safe. Actual business was at 4.87 for Jong and 4.8834 a 4.89 for sight drafts, TUR GOLD MARKET, Tho warlike nature of the news from Europe had considerable effect upon the price ot gold, aud there was quite an animated epeculation on it, Gold opened at 107, advanced to 10744, ana finally reacted to 1074s. The carrying rates were 1, 2, 3, 4.and 344 por | tent. Loans were also made flat, Gold clearings at the National Bank of the State of New York :— Goid exchanges... Currency balances, .
