THE RAILROAD STRIKE. * Condition of the Contest Between the Reading *~ Railroad and the Engineers. BOTH SIDES FIRM. The Workmen Well-Behaved, but Determined and Confident of Success, MEN ON THE ENGINES. —-——. NEW. PurLapgtruia, April 16, 1877. All the engineers and firemen who have quit work on tho Philadelphia and Reading Railroad aod whose homes are in or near this city, meot at the Merchant's Hotel, About 100 of them have been assembled there all day, quictly discussing tho situation. They are very careful in thei actions and con- versation, and aro under instructions uot to go near the railroad depots for the purpose of intimidating the new hands, aithough they Qpproach them on the street and endeavor to persuade them not to assist the railroud company by accepting employment irom it, In this they are often successful. Judging from the appearance of the striking engincers now in this city they areu quiet, Intelligent, well beliavod body of mechanics, who be- Weve they are right and feel confident of success. THE LEADERS OF THE MEX, The committce of the engincers who are acting for the Brotherhood are the tollowing:—W. #. Parker, cbair- man; W. J. Sweigund, 8. J. Dampham, E. VU. Tyler, Louis Arnold, William Lucking and David Cooper, [fois committee have held frequent secret meetings, und have received advices from all Mong tho line, They will not talk much for publication beyond annouucing that all the signs are hopeful, The company, they state, has entirely stopped running coal trains, and have much troublein getting their freight and other trains through, espe- pially on the main line, They are not yet prepared to say how many men have leit their engines, The road employs 400 engincers altogether, and about three- quarters of these are socicty men, All but two of the society men aro knowa to the committee us having @topped work, and several who have not joined the union have also shown their sympathy by leaving their engines, the Brotherhood having resolved to con- tribute to the support of non-union men who join them on the sume terms as their own members, TROMISES OF SUPFORT. As to their ability to hold out the strikers say that they have assurances of support trom many quarters, There are about 13,000 members of the society, pot more than 4U0 of whom will be involved in the present strike. While they are out they are guaranteed $60 per month, Asimalltax of about a dollar a mouth upon the working members will be ali that will be necessary to raise this fund. The men say that the strike cannot but be very expensive to the raliroud company, us they know that since Saturday mignight, when strike began, at least rep locomotives ba’ Deen ‘burnt,’ which necessitates a heavy expenditure for repairs, ‘A representative trum the New York Central road said he bad been instructed by the meu of that line to ay to the Reading meu, ‘Stand firm and we wili sup- ort you.”” Sunslar assurances were received trom tho Ni ‘ork und Harlem, New York and New Haven and and Hudson River roads. WiaT THK COMPANY ARE DOING, ‘The Reauing Railroad Company advertised this @iorning for competent engineers not members of the Brotherhood, und have ulready bud respons weveral huadred men, Ali applicants tn thi telerred to the depot ut Ninth und Gree je Duudred inen applied ut the Fourth «treet d were directed at once to Ninth and Green street ‘As fust as these men wero selected and ac- cepted they were burriediy assigned to trains. The Hxnatp currespondent to-day visited voth depots— the one at Broad and Callowhill streets, forthe main line, and the station at Niuth and Greeu streets for the Germantown and Norristuwn branch. Atneitherplace ‘was there any sign of disorder, although it was evident Shat the company was suffering unnoyance aud incon- Venrence in getting tueir trains uit, geurly all of them Doig wore or less delayed. AT THE COMPANY'S OFPICE. Very little cun be lcurned at the oflice of the com- pany, in this city to-day. Manugor Wootten ts still at ing where be went on Saturday to wait for tur- ther ‘develo wnents und provide for emergencies, Theretore ail advices concerning the varivus branches of the ruud are despatched at once to that placo with- Out any regurd to the waiu ultice. One despatch received on Fourth etreet, and the only one vf any note, came frum the Mahonoy and Shemokin brauvch, and stated that everything was well on that line. The engineers in that region ure not so closely identified with the Brotnerhood ag they are im this, and therefore the meu who lelt the line ‘were few in number and trains this morning are re- ported ws ruuuing without delay. Mr. Franklin &. Gowen, President of the company, to-day sunt to the press tho following officlul state- ment in relation to the strike : “We aro getting all the engineers we want, the passenger and freight traius aro moving regui he coul trafic in the coal region is also boing moved promptly, and by Tuesday or Wednesday the col trade of the main line will be provided tor. Ap- phcations for positions by thoge not counected with the Brutberhoud are very numerous, and no diffloulty is apprehended in promptly supplying the pluces of 811 those who leave,’ THE KNGINEKRS’ ULTIMATUM. Tho following Is the tult text of the reply of the en- gineers to the proposition of the railroad company, Upon the disapprove! ut which the men announce thelr intention to quit work va miduight on Saturday Purapguenta, April 14, 1877. Passenger, ireigbt and coal trains ran regularly to-day to and from Potisville, and throughout the county on $he branches, The Brotherhood men are off duty, but their places have been supplied trom various sources, Ye coal trains wore not despatched at as early an hour this «morning a8 usual, tome of the engineers faving been called to Rending to be prepared {ran passenger and freight engines. They returned to-night, and uoless something unexpected should turn ep, ali coal trains will run regularly to-morrow and gutime. The railroad officials invariably qualily their expressions of confidence of ability to weather the storm by the proviso, “If re not deceived in our men.” It is evident that they have not full contidence Jn their pew recraits, and fear that they may be suc- evesiaily tampered with by the Brotherhood men, ‘There is nd for pot stags the men now on duty dipley uneasy undersigned committee, Fepreventing | fooling, Some of them say they | Koop & Co. It is feared that these latter may create troubie for new hands Gilling the places of strikers. HOW THE CONTEST STANDS. ‘The uation is this:—If the Brotherhood cannot re- duce the men now at work they cannot win, They say they ure making converts all the time. A pumber mea who on runs to-day gave up their cngines ‘on the road and were replaced by others. This action confirms the trath of the claims that converts aro being made A remarkable aspect of the strike ts the fact that most of the firemen refuse to be promoted to en- gineers, preferring to act in coucert with thei gineers, They even reject tho inducements of bigher wages than thi gipeors were receiving. One of the legitimate results of entrusting evgines to green hunds was manifested to-day. ‘Two engines, one on the natn ine and one on the ‘kimen brunch, were ‘burned, ;”” and a burned aes means @ greatly damaged one, MADHOUSE STATISTICS.
