CABLE MONOPOLY. [CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.} amalgamation, but those who believed in its Permanent success have lost forty per ceut on their imvestments by their credulity, In conclusion I would recommend the real investors in the Direct Cable Company seriously to consider the ulterior effect of the policy now proposed. The memo- rial of association of the company forbids all working mts with any existing cable company. To earry tho scheme of Mr. Pender liquidation avd reorganization would be necessary; im an: case the liquidation would involve great ris and expense, and it is most doubtful whether even if the requisite majority of three-quarters were obtained, the courts would allow a solvent company to o into liquidation merely with the object of altering ‘the fundamental basis of its existence and in defiance of the determined opposition of « considerable portion of the proprietary, who consider such a course neither far nor peer le, I have the honor to bi SHAREHOLDER IN THE D, U, 8. C, C, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Dull and Weak Stock Market— Speculators at Sear GOLD LOWER AT 107 38 A 107 18. Money on Call 5 and 7 Per Cent, with the Highest Rate at the Close—Government Bonds Strong, but Quiet—Rail- . way Mortgages Steady. Pactdidr ctl vt Wau. Strecr, } Tuxspay, Dec. 26—6 P. M. Bulls were not in as festive a mood thin morning us season would seem to call for, judging from the apathy with which they regarded proceedings, and the amall resistance offered to a declining market, The whole list was slippery toa greater or less de- gre, but the cbief slide occured in Lake Shore, Michi- gan Centraland Delaware and Lackawanna, the fall amounting to about one per cent. Almost the only ex- ception to the above was in the case of New Jersey Central, which gained a little in net results, and at one time was even threatening in its strength. It is given out that this company have becn successtul in obtaining subscriptions to the extent of $1,000,000 for their newfangled due bills, though it is reported that they are at the same timo, rather inconsistently, ,t would seem, endeavoring to negotiate a loan on :uew Lehigh and Wilkesbarre bonds on the basis of fiity cents on the dollar. If there be any truth in the story, it would appear to suggest one of those financial arrargements in which Peter and Paul figure as con- Spicuous agents, New Jersey Central had, however, no strength to Spare to aid its neighbors with, and these latter pos- sessed no strength of their own, consequently Lake Shore and the other favorites wero dismally weak together. It is asserted that the Lako Shore earnings are not turning out well, and this was put forward @ cause for the decline. The more probable reason is that the bull party, acting upon the principle of mak- ing bay while the sun shines, improved the occasion and sold out when the price was 60 or thereabouts, At the same time Twenty-third street ana the Osborne party were large short sollers, and to-day the former bears, at least, repeated their little game with a liberal distribution of favors. Michigan Central followed in the wake of the favorite, losing even more, in point of values, and with a fifth Jess amount of transactions. The Delaware and Lackawanna directors met this morning and reported their not earnings at one-half of ove percent. It was at first understood that tnese figures represented the gains for the quarter, but it was afterward stated that they proceeded from the earnings of November only. At any rate the stock d@rooped under the report, and brought up finally at one per cent below its standing point. Illinois Central receded trom 65 to 631;, the two per cent disappointment in the shape of a dividend acting Like an emetic on stockholders, The arrival of nearly $3,000,000 in bullion since Sat- ‘urday proved too much o! a good thing for the Gold Room, and added so much moro deadweight to be car- vied, Bulls in the metal were rather disgusted at the result whieh forced the price down from 107% to 1074, and malcted them to the tune of from 4 per cent to 1-32 as a charge for having it carried over until to- morrow. Money on call ranged between 5 and 7 per cent, clos- éng at the latter rate. Provision for interest and divi- ends payable on the first of the year and the plethora of gold have rendered it scarce for the moment.
