Wasnixaron, Dec. 26,—Mr. Cronin and his friends have discovered that an awkward ques- tion will prescnt, itaelf aa toon as his eredentlals are presented for examination, for, upon thelr face, they bear the statement of the Gosernor under the seal of the State of the election of two Republican Electors, whereas it will not ap- pear that Mr. Cronin was elected by themn a messenger to bring the returns to this city, and that his election was brought about by two other gentlemen who claitned to bave assoclated themacives with bim without any opretense whatever on the part of the Governor that either onc of them was ever voted for, much less elected, by the people of Orcgon. Mr, Cronin has placed the archives of the Electoral College on deposit, as some re- port, in some place of safety which he docs not even disclose to his friends. To-day, however, he showed signs of wanting to fnd Mr, Ferry, and the reason of this activity is sald to be that the Democrats havé ascertatned that, as dupli- cates of his Electoral College farce were for- warded to Mr, Ferry by mail, and have just been recelved, nothing can bo gafned by Cronin walt- ing longer. There was no quorum fnthe Scnate to-day, ana none is expected in either House to-morrow. CRONIN UNLOADA. Cronin has delivercd his pretended Electoral vote ot Oregon, and has not recelved his pay and mileage. Ho started into Vhginta to see his sister, but, when he reached Mancheeter, thought it best to come here and unload. CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRATA BECOMING UNEASYs Spectal Dirpatch to The Tribune. WasniNoToN, D, C., Dec. 20.—.A considerable number of conservative Democrats are becom- Ing alarned at the positfon the House has as- sumed with respect to the inviolabflity of the telegraph. The subject will probably be brought up, I any businessis done in the flouss to-morrow, by Proctor Knott, who, it is antici- pated, will present telegrams from Mr, Morri= son, and move for the urrest of William Orton to show cause for contempt. It Is posBible that some of the conservative Demodrats will pro- test that the House has gone too far, und is un- dermining one of the principles which lics at the foundation of free zoverntent; that it s less fmportant to discover what politieal tele- rams niay have been sent than it Is to preserve nviolate this constitutional priuciple, and to avold any such exerelse of arbitrary power, NO FOWER TO EXCUSE, 7o the Western Auociuted Irbsr.
