COTTON IN THE SOUTHWEST. ST, LOUIS 48 A MANUFACTURING CITY. [from the St, Louis Globe-Democrat, Nov. 6] As the winter approaches and the Sj, Lou:s trade with the South and Southwest begins to revive, our merchants would do well to cast about them for means of increasing a business which must ultimately be tc them a source of the richest profit, “The opening of Arkansas and Texas tous by railroad communication bas made St. Louis not only the market where boik these Statee must purchase their supplies, but also the objective point to which all their produce mast be sent for sale. Consisting, as it does, mostly o! cotton, the facilities already atforded by St. Louis capital tor its compression and subsequent more convenient transportation to the East are creditable eo far as they go, bat ifeifort ceases at this point not only past ex- penditure but tuture profit will alike be lost. There 1s really no good reason why St. Louis should not become one of the Grst cotton manufacturing cities in America, We have everything in our favor. Labor is cheap, fuel is: abundant, machinery 1s purchasabie at low rates from our ownor neighboring foundries, and capital In profusion may be bad both in St Louis, and, upoa application, from the East. In addition :o these particulars wo have a great advantage in the fact of our proximity to the region where the cor don is raised. A vast expenditure for transporte tion may thus be economized, and all thw saving will contribute to the cheapening of the goods, and enable us to undersei] Eastern competitors, It w Inrpossibie to transport the-raw material to the E: to manufacture there, to send it back, paying treigh' both ways, ana then to sell at the rates to which tne goods might be reduced if manulactured in St Louw Our manufacturers could aford to undercut the prices of the Eastern mis so greatiy as to deprive the latter of every cent of profit, while St, Louis mills could suill gain a handsome percentage on their goods. It 18 good for St Louis that cout rowers in Arkan- 8 aud Texas are beginoing to seud such large con- signments of cotion to this city. During the cotton transportation seagon of 1873-4 the amouat broughs into 3t. Louis by the Iron Mountain and Southern Toad was 63, bales; in 1874-5 it was 100,606 bates, and im 1875-6 1b was 191,218 bales. It i3 tous easily seen that (his road bas every year di led mount of cotton brought to St Louis, besides trausporting large quantities to Cairo, ‘That 1+ will continue for Years in tuture to double its cotton transportation, as it has done for tho past three years, is tolerably cer- tain; but if cotton mills were established in St. Louis, ‘and once put fairly in operation, no one doubts th: the cotton trade of this city would in the next decade be counted by the milion instead of by the hunared thousand bales. According to the census of 1870 the cotton pro- duction of Arkansas 247,000 and that of Texas 300,000 bales. Any ono who knows bow great bas been the improvetnent in these two States im the past Rix years will tind littic difficulty in believing that the 697,000 bales then raised must by this time be in. creased to nearly if not to more than 1,000,000, If there were coigon manufactories in St. Louis nine bales out of d in Arkansas and Texas would Ld Teunessee and Northern Mississippi and Louisiana, How great @ feild of mercantile and smdustrial Prosperity is thas opened to us cannot ap- nage at the first glance the Pos 0 mui carefally surveyed in order to bar | reciated. it Will not answer t& say that St Louis is destined te greatness, abd that this cotton trade will be thrust upon her whether she willor no, Trade comes in n¢ such fashion, The business men of acity must use every means in their power not only to Keep trade ak Teady gained, but to extend their influence in every possible way, and if our 5:, Louis merchants can oaly be roused to the truth, they will perceive that in thé establishment of cottea manutactories and additional cotton warehouses there is a chance tor a nancial 6uc- ce-s and a commercial prosperity such as lew cities have been ‘ortunate enough to venold, KILLED BY GHOSTS.
