AMUSEMENTS. @RcTOR BERLIOZ’s SYMPHONY AT sTEINWAY HALL. | The Grst symphony concert of Theodore Thomas Wook place last night at Steinway Hall before an audi- ence that filled the music hall of the metropolis to averfiowing. The occasion was worthy of such a mag. Bificent response on the part of our musical public. There were three works—Beethoven’s eighth Phony, Schubert’s piano fantasia, opus 15, arrany: for piano ana orchestra by Liszt, and Hector Berlivz's @ramatic symphony, ‘Romeo and Juliet.” The Beet- Roven symphony was played as only Thomas’ orchestra fan play it, with « due appreciation of the sublime Adeas of the immortal composer. Mme. Schiller did jus- tice to a work that was introduced to the American Public by William Mason at a Philbarmonic concert, and which Rubinstein afterward played in tts original | form asa piano solo. But the chief share of interest ‘Was concentrated upon the work of Berlioz The late Dr, Ambros, a well known musical litérateur of ‘Vienna, has given a fanciiui sketch of this symphony: ‘He says that it is remarkable that Shakespeare's love tragedy, as treated by Beriioz, should lie in the cus- tomary tour symphonic movements, notwithstanding whe cloud of interludes, arias and choruses, not forgetting the finaie, which 18 worthy of a grand opera, Berlioz was an ardent admirer of Shakespeure; Witness his “Lear” overture, his marche funebre to | “Hamlet,” and the love poem of ‘Romeo and Juliet” | Attracted him to the composition of a grand symphony, embodying in music the hapless loves of the Montague And the Capulet, The lyric and passionate features Bt the tragedy have been frequently wade use of by Pperatic composers, Bui Berlioz was cast in a higher would, and to is inspired mind the tdeas took the form of a symphony. MR. ARBUCKLE’S BENEFIT. The benefit of dir. M. Arbuckle, at tho Twenty-sec- ond Regiment Armory last night, was in ali respects Buccessful, although the building 1s so large that a geod concert audience seems lost init.
