VOLUME XXXI. e Chicago Dailp CHICAGO, SUNDAY. OCTOBER 29, 1876—SIXTEEN PAGES. ribnne, PRICE FIVE CENTS, - DRY GOODS, BOOYS, SHOES, &c. FURNITURE, Chicago is the second city in the TUnion in re- to its mercantile intercsts and the charac- ter and quality of its hotels and the number of travelers thut visit it The merchants of New York advertise largely to procure the trade of travelers. It is invaria- | bly a cash business, and because they have Joarned that where there is a great traveling centre there must be a good deal of transient profitable business. - While Chicago is the second city in impor- tance, its merchants do not display one-tenth of the enterprise shown by New York merchants in cultivating the business of strangers and travelers. * The number of srrivals at the Patmer House. the Grand Pacific, and the other Chicago bouses of best. reputation, are fully as large as any of the New York hotels, while the railway depart-~ ures make the Chicazo morning newspapers of {ar more value than the morning newspapers of New York, because the latter city has so many {rains on which travelers may procure evening pewspapers, while travel from Chicago 1s re- stricted, in 2 mercantile sense, to one channel mainl—THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE. pesjers In Artlstic and Flne Goods for Household and Personal Use. «CLIMAX " BARN-DOOR HANGERS, « ACME » BARN-DOOR ROLLERS— ; Manufactured by S. The judges prononnce the Knabe Pianos to be the best_exponents of the art of Piano-making, and fully entitled to the leading position, com- bining all the requisites of a perfect instru- ment in the highost degree: power, richness and singing quality of tone, ease and elas- ticity of touch, effectiveness of action, solidity and originality of construction and excellence of workmanship. The Knabe award js not confined to any single style of instrument, 28 is the case with other exhibitors in this depart- ment, but comprises all four styles, and siands unqualified by phrases indicative of mediocrity. The closing of the galleries last night at tha Exposition Building forced the first comers of the crowd upon the fioor. There was not such a throng as on the occasion of Ingersoll's speech, for many who found the inpossibility of Learing on that occasion did not care to en- counter the rush and jam of a second occasion liable to.be equally unprofitable in the way of hearing. The Republican party has been singo- larly unfortunate in its speaking arrange- ments. The noccssity of providing a hall sufliciently large to accommodate the peo- ple who want to hear the speakers has eadly militated sgainst their being heard. It is unfortunate that the mcetings of tha Republicans cannot be held in smah halls, liko those of the Democracy, where the speaker can be heard in every part by everybody. The Fx- position Building was never intended for public speaking. There is probably no one pile on the topof the earth that is wealthier in bad acoustic properties than that building. There is 1o way in which more than 3,000 people. can be so dis-. ‘posed=that they can be so accommodated—that they can hear o word that is said; and, however silver-tongued the orator, his best cfforts are wasted on the unappreciative shadows that lurk in the roof. But, in sbite of the fact that there was no carthly prospect of hearinga word, the crowd poured in. Experience had demonstrated that there would be ncrowd. There was nothing to- hope for in the way of a seat. but a man whom all respected was to cxpound principles that all honest men-advocate, and even though they might hear nothing of what was said the people determined to 5 GIVE THE ORATOR A RECEPTION that would be at once a compliment to himseclf and the party of which he is the representative. Before it was dark the crowd began to as- scmble, and at 6 o’clock there was a strong enough vote represented to beat the whole Democratic ticket in the county, and make a Jast impression on the result in the State. From that time on the crowds came pouring In, until every part of thebuilding that waslighted up, from the extreme northern end to the fountan, and even away back in the dark, every inch of room was occu- pied. The accident to the western gallery when Ingerzoll spoke, and when one of the supports gave way, led the managers to suspect that it was not safe, andsoall approaches there- to were closed, and the immense throng twrnea upon the lower part. At the lowest estimate there were 25,000 peo~ ple assembled at 7:30, and outside there wers almost balf as many more trying to work their way in. Those who were successful enongh to ‘gain entrance to the buildinz had to fight for a chance to see, and this created no end of fun. Oune of the chief misfortunes under which the meeting labored was the presence of an ignorant person dressed in a blue suit and calling himself a policeman. His number is 233, and the func- tious of his office appeared to be to fnsult ladies and gentlemen and make himsclf generally ob~ noxious. Citizens argued with him, but the brute, establishing no end of presumption on his size, defied everybody. There was some talk of ejecting him from the building, but finally it was concluded to make a complalnt sgainst him and have bim . REMOVED FEROM TOE YORCE. = Supt. Hickey bas been toa large extent for- tunate in the selection of his men, and if he wants to keep up the morale of the force e should get rid of Nv. 23215 sooti as possible: The people of Chicago are fo such a state of ex- ditement now that they will not bear much, and they are as much disposed to resent assaults by the police as by mep of intelligence. Tlhe sim- ple fact that; No. 233 s a policernan does tot warrant this abnse of every human-being sith whom e comes in contact, and it would be'a charity to his tamily,’if any people & unfortunate relation to him, to G at once, and theredy relicve him of the danger of having bis brains blown ont. - s At 7:45 there was room for no more. : Fhe building was packed. The elevator frame was loaded, and_every packare that was strong enough to atford 4 {oothold was pre-cinpted by the curious. " . Until the arrival of the speaker the diflcrent elements of the crowd amused thieinselves'in various fashicns. At the southiern cnd is a huge whecl, used as a Hy-wheel darinz the Exposition. Supposing it to be perfectly safe, a few daring spirits climbed up and seated themsclves upon the npper part of the diske. Then came the mischievous yoath of the assem- blage and, ‘ostigated by the devil, they did turn the wheelsantit those seated upon the zenith of the circumference were lying low under the nadir thereof. The wheel revolved, and the crowd yelled with delight, while the unfortunates howled in the fear of being ground izfl:ne western side of the throng seemed 3G be the more enthusiastic. (THREE CHEER3 FOR CHARLEY BEEDI" yelted a voice. And three cheers were with avim that it Charley Reed heard it he mizht well afford to put up with a dozen defeats in criminal trials. Then the west end became sentimental, and dropped into music. “The Battle Cry of Free- dom,” *John Brown’s Body,” and that most and especially obnoxious anthem, *Tramp, tramp, the boys are marching,” seemed to the favorites, and the crowd joined in with a +will in the chorus of each. . Then they descended from music to practical
