ee NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY,.SEPTEMBER 12, 187 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Market Irregular and Declin- ing—Speculation Active. . GOLD 110 1-4 A 110. Government Bonds Quiet and Firm—Railroad Bonds Strong—Money on Call Easy at 1 a1 1-22 Per Cent Wau Stasesy } Moxpay, Sept. 11—6 P. M. Tho glamor of the coal stocks still maintains its baleful influence and rests like an evil eye on the market. It matters not that the tidings from com- mercial quarters are cheerful under the anticipations of a roviving trade and that business to acertain de- greo 1s shaking off the teeling of depression which has #0 long weighed it down, for the incubus of the an- thracito tancies still rests upon the Stock Exehange and smothers all attempts at a permanent improve- ment in prices, ‘The bulk of to-day’s business was confined to the above named specialties, Delaware and Lackawanna leading off with 50,000 shares, and New Jersey Central following with 11,000. The decline was in about tho maine proportion, the first named giving way some five points, while the latter held its own with comparative stiffness, a difference of 13{ points marking the apogce and perigee of its fluctuations, Delawaro and Hudson made an equally bad exhibit asits neighbor, and scored 4 loss of 5 per cent on sales of a few thousand shares, sellers’ options being still pressed at a concession of 3 to 4 per cent from the cash prices. Indeed, cash stocks were more in demand than for some time back, and premiums were paid for the use of the coal stocks for delivery as high as % to 1 per cent for a single day. ‘Tho event ot the morning was the publication of a “statement” by the New Jersey Central road, over the hgnature ot President Jobnston, which, pending its analysis by Interested dealers, had the eflect to hold the stock steady, somewhat after the fashion of an ac- cusea party who asks a suspension of public opinion, Public opinion docs not appear to shink very highly of it, and though Mr, Johnston inti- mates that “the persistent misrepresentations and sensational rumors which have been so busily ¢ir culated,” &c., were more provocative to its issue than any necessity for an exposé of the company’s condi- tion, be yet proceeds to make a showing, which, from his hopes of better things in the future, he evidently doos not think much of in the present. Late in the day the market was genorally better, even the coal roads participating in the improvement. THK BALES TO-DAY.
