There was an excellent programme at this theatre last evening, in which all the performers appeared to the delight of a large audience that filled every part of the house, It ts not too much to say that the pro- Prictors have succeeded in combining a variety com- pany scarcely equalled and certainly not execlled in Now York. ‘The programme inciuded sketehes called “District Telegraph,” “3. 0, T.,!) “Whar's dat Galt”? in which Billy Barry caused much merriment, and a local extravaganza, cutitled “Down Broadway,’? A large audience grected him, aud the usual success attended his efforts to amuse. Old playgoers are compelled to laugh at His Lordship and his oddities, £0 it is Lo Wonder that those who sce him for the first time lead in the applause and jadzhter, The cast in- cludes Miss Linda Dietz and Mr. M. C. Daly, who play the parts assumed by thei at the Fifth Avenue, EAGLE THEATRE, | This bright, pleasant little theatre was filled Inst even, ing by an appreciative audience. A spocial meeting of the Diroctors of the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor was hold yesterday ufternoon in room 59 Bible Hcuso, Astor piace, Tho President of the society, Howard Potter, was in the chair, ond among the directors present wero Henry Pellew, Adam Spies, Dr. Frank- lin, George W. Abbey, Dr. Crampton, Robert Boya, Edward Bowne and Robert B. Minturn. The object of the meeting was to consider what action the socloty should take to augment its funds, which are getting very low. tis expected that tho coming winter will prove oxcessively heavy on the resources of the society. The reports from the visitors in the various districts show that in addition to the ordinary mass of poverty there are large accessions of respect- le persons irom the industrious classes, who belore have been chicily self-supporting, but who aro now obliged to seek help, Already Journeymen discharged from closing founaries, factories, yards and work- shops and clerks hithertoemployed in mercantile es- tablishients are seeking relicl, In view of these facts it was decided to issuo a special circular to tho clorgy of various denominations and to all the members of the society asking for in- creased subscriptions, The clergy will be especially Tequested to appeal to their congregations for assist ance, as without it the work of the society will bo necessarily curtailed. Strange as it may seem, tho recent strike of “the ‘longshoremen’? has had a marked influence upon the number of applicants for relief, hunureds of these men, Who were earning comfortable livings betore the trike, now being dependent on the society, They re- ceive less sympathy, however, than is given to that class of the deserving poor who are idle only because they cannot get work, avd workmen contemplating strikes, trusting to the society, will do weil to bear this fact in ‘mind, 3 SHOOTING OF DETECTIV: BRADY. A HkRALD reporter conversed with some of tho Heulth officials in regard to the matter, All coincided iu the opinion that no eptdemte would result in the City, ussigning as reasons that the season 16 too far ad- Vaucod to permit its spread, and also that the cases ro- ported were widely separated and promptly attended to, The discovery of the cases, however, shows the necessity for the ‘establishment of a system of quar- Antine at railroads coming irom the South during the existence of the epidemic in Savannah, ag suggested in the HeRALD of Sunday last, by which all danger would be obviated.
