TINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL | The Stock Market Uuli and Irregular, With- out Material Change. GOLD FIRM AT Il 84 A Il 7-8 Money on Call 2 1-2 and 2 Fer Cent--Govern- ment and Railway Bonds Less Active, but Steady—Investment Shares Quiet. Watt Strext, } Tavxspay, July 20—6 P. M. Bpeculation to-day was little more than a repetition ef that which has preceded it since the beginning of the week. ‘Tho market was sluggish, destitute of buoyancy, difficult to sustain, easy to yield and devoid Of attraction to all save the few parties directly en- gaged in manipulating the figures. With the ther- mometer ‘up to par and a fraction, there is little en- couragement to even the most enthusiastic of bulls or bears to induige in the physical exercise incident tothe purchase or sale of stocks. ‘The most noteworthy feature of the day was a do- @line in Pacific Mail, which stopped to the front in the Deginning at 24%, but later took a back seat after a fall to 23%;. The cause assigned for this chango is that the expense of pusting the steamship City of Tokio in & seaworthy condition wili amount to nearly $200,000, and thas make another hole in the treasury of the company. It is also gossiped that a statement is forthcoming which will show the condition of tho same. About noon there was a trifling rally along the line, ‘Dut it was not maintained, and, as will be seen by the closing prices, the aay’s work shows but little im- provement on that of yesterday. Western Union opened at 707, declined to 703,, ral- Ned to 707j, and ended at 70%.
