POUGHKEEPSIE AND THE RESIGNATION OF JEWELL. WHY EX-GOVERNOR JEWELL WAS ASKED TO RE= SIGN—HE DISPLACED REPUBLICANS TO PRO= VIDE FOR DEMOCRATS AND RIFUSED TO TAKE A HINT. Bostox, July 20, 1876, Solon Carpenter writes from Washington to agen tleman in Vermont, in regard to Governor Jewell’s leaving the Cabinet, as follows :— The reason for the dismissal was known to Jowell and has been discussed by him and the President, as well ag in Cabinet meetings, some time previous to the requested resiguation of the late Postinaster General, although Jewell states he knows nothing of i, It ap- pears that when Governor Jewell accepted the position in the Cabinet which he has now Leen calied upon 80 suddenly to vacate he said to the President that ho wished forthe privilege of keeping men 1n bis office whom he found by experience to be reliable and accom. plished clerks, no matter what might be their political preference, merit being the only criterion, To this the President said be should have no objection, and in fact hud always believed in that course as for the best interest of the government, Jewell then goes to work and appoints democrats, of whose capucity for work he knew nothing, aud in ‘many cases displacing republi- cans, who bad good records in the office, for tho pur- pose’ of making room for the new appointees. ‘This becoming known to the President, the mater wag brought up in Cabinet meeting. The course pursued by Jewell met the unanimous disepproval of the Cubl- net and the Postmaster General was given time to tuke the matter into consideration. Whether he considered it or pot is not known, but he certuinly failed to act in accordance with the hint given him, and after @ rousonable time had been given him hie resignation was requested, and off camo his official head. Perhaps it ought to be stated that Mr. Carpenter holds cffice under the President and speaks as that high official would be likely to do of this matter. ‘This official Washington writer adds :— Jeweil’s record in office has not been of the most approved WI . while his assumptions of reform and revolution have been frequently noted. He has aped at reform and fallen short of itsaccomplishinent, Feo- ple iu Washington who have watched his career both in public and social life compare him to the comet, which shines with great effulgence at frst sight, but quickly pales belore the public gaze. ‘fhe political ignilicance which is given to the change by some of the newspaper correspondents amounts to nothing, and ts not what the President is uiming at by the change. THE LIBERAL REPUBLICANS. THEY DECLARE UNANIMOUSLY FOR HAYES AND WHEEL! New Yorx, July 20, 1876. To Tus LiskRaL Repupuicaxs ov tue Usitep States :— Ou the 9th day of May last, a meeting of the National Committee of-Libera! Republicans, baving been duly called, was held at the Filth Avenue Hotel, in the city of New York, At such meeting thirty-one States wero represented, After due discussion it was unanimously resoived to hold a National Convention of Liberal Republicans on the 26th day of July, 1876, in the city of Philadelphia, and a call for such Convention was issued to the public, reaffirming the principles of tho platform adopted by the liberal Convention held ia Cincinnati in 1872, Subsequently to this action by the National Committee, and without a dissenting voice, the following preamble and resoiution wore adopted:. Whereas the hopo is entertained by many patriotic citi. zens, that by their continual agication within party linet one or both of the dominant parties may be led in platform J nominees to xrant all the politien reformation required the liberal republican organization; and whereas the Iiberal party. desifing only the publle good regard parties, does not favor causeless independent action, if It should certainty appear that ail which i¢ seeks im the wa; of political purification can be as well secured shrouyl other oryanizutions; thoretore Resolved, That it 'ufter the republican and the democratig conventions have been held in June next one or both of these parties shall seem, in the judgmeut of our chairman, Ar, Kthan Alien, to have responded to the principles and aims of the liberal republican organization, both im measures and men, in that eveut our chairman 18 hereby authorized, r luriher conference with this committee, by & proclama: tion, to annul the eal fora national convention, this day ms, and their action being unfavorable to reform, out chairman is empowered to take such action In furthoring the call for a liberal convention, this day ordered, as he may deen: necessary. The republican and democratic conventions have both been beld, and, as commanded in the above reso lution, Lhave since vonferred by correspondence with the members of the National Liberal Committee, and the response, which is in entire barmony with my own views, is almost unanimous to annul the call for the National Convention above referred to, and to approve, in tho name of the hberal republicans of the United States, of the nominations of Rutherford B. Hayes, of Ohio, for President, and of Wilham A. Wheeier, of New | York, tor Vice President, It is a logical resalt of the liberal movement that those who still adhere to it should at this time cor. dially support Hayes and Wheeler, More decided tpan the platiorm upon which he stands General Hayes has personally declared tor civil service relorm, for the re- | turnto specie payment at the earliest possibie day and for the rule of one term only for the Presidency, the latter prineiple being found only in the liberal re- publican plattorm, ‘ibe characters of the nominees guarantee the priuciples they protess, Ii the ‘*hberals” In 1872 sustamed Horace Greeley, who was the foremost republican of his day, because he was an unselfish pas triot and an honest man, they mast now sustain Gea- eral Hayes for the same reasons, and to ao otherwise Would be inconsistent action, The opposition of the ‘“1{berals”” has never been against the republican party, ot which they formed a part, but rather against those who, uniortunately tor tt and the nation, bad contro! of its destiny to ive discredit, The yood results which have been gained by the in- suguration of the liberal movement of 1872 is a matter ef congratulation. It was then that the demand for reform Was mnade against existing abuses by those who bad before acted within the republican lines. Subse- quent events have more than confirmed the warnings of the *‘liberais” then given aud have vindicated thet efforts then made for national reform, Firmly m: taining their stand for the past four years, they have seen th ae keane voter” of all parties adopt their views, and at the cleventh bour have seen the republi- can party, in convention assembled, in entire harmony with the demands of the liberals, disregarding the “machine politician,’ so called, place in nomination mon whose great distinction is that they are thoroughly honest as well as capable, The conscic: of the na on, which, rising above er revol against the republican organization in 1872, must now indorse this action, The ‘‘liboral movement” will be remembered as an evidence that, when the bour demands it, the people are capable of making party managers subservient te their will, The protest, in defiance of party discipline, originally made at Cincinnati in 1872, is a proof that the citizen remains faithful to an ponest discharge o his political duties, though party leaders become cor. rupt it only remains for me to declare, by virtue of the authori ven me aa above, that the liberal republi- caus of the United States, through their National Com. mittee approving of the nominees of the republican | es We ato < pegged Convention of Liberal publieans,* beld at Philadelphia on ‘20eb aay of July, 1870, is annulled. x oe ETHAN ALLEN, Chairman National Liberal Ketorm Convention, TILDEN DEMOCRATIC CLUB. The Committee on Organization, of the Tilden and Hendricks Central Democratic Club, met yesterday at the office of Thomas C. Campbell, ia the Post building, ‘to arrange Preliminaries for the organization of the club, But five pereons were present. They decided to recommend Peter B Olney, the ¢ a0, to call meeting of the club for W. ning next The meeting will likely be held at the Everett House,
