For some time there has been trouble between Henry W. Kanaga, Jacob Peters and Joseph M. Mortimer, the proprietors of the Grand Central Theatre of this city. Mr. Mortimer has been the manager since the com- mencement of the copartnership, nearly four years ago, and ander his direction it has been made a@ prosperous and popular variety theatre, The Grand Central has @ local historic no- toriey. Some years ago it was burned down and a number of ballot girls were burned to death, Still later green-eyed jealousy prompted @ fast young man to shoot down a ballet girl with whom he was enam- ored, Itis not unnatural that the tragedies of the past should bequeath the legacy of peaceful tragedy among its conductors, A yeur ago the quarrel between Kanaga and Peters on one side and Mortimer on the other took shape in the first party applying for and obtaining the appointment of a receiver tor tho estab- Nabment, still leaving Mortimer the direction of every- thing but the cash receipts. ‘Thia hag not poured suffi- cient oil apon the troubled waters, and the scene to- day, the absolute sale of the good will and appoint- | ments of the theatre, is the finale of tho protracted quarrel, SORNE AT THE SALE, Entering the theatre at about ten o'clock, the hour announced for the sale, thermometer 100 degrecs in the shade, expecting to find a handful of interested peopl we were surprised at the scene. Notwithstanding th sweltering weather 300 people, including several ladies, wero sitting expectant. in the — par- quet.| Tho stage presented tho appearance of rehearsal, some thirty people wandering about with auction bills for parts. Here were a coupie of horses lying upon their sides as if exbausted with the heat; a locomotive leaned heavily against a bronze house waiting only for water tosteam up, The rehearsal gas light was in place, and some wag had placed a skull upon the light, as if poor Yorick was ready to have bis grinning chaps smacked by an auctioneer Hamlet Old men and young were threading their way with a curions kind of chagrined awe, as they for the first time handled and saw the scenery that was wont to look so grand betore the toothghts, Banners that flashed their beapangled folds in the glare of the calcium light were ouly, after all, tawdry, dusty ¢anvas; here a pile of finery ‘that ha of hght-tooted’ ballet girls, and seemed 80 and web like, was only a heap of limp, dirty tulle, armor that glistened and made th only unromantic tin, and soap. It excited syin Positive fact dissipated which the glamour of the imagination the impressions of those inexperienced men, who now for the first time trod the holy ground. They glided about in a. vague sort of way, and gaid plainly in gaping mouths and disappointed 'woks, that all the world was a show and shuilled back to the parquet as if they knew is all the time, but were desporately fear- ful the crowd would tind vut they did not. THE PLAY BEGINS, The bell rings and tbe play beg! Before the auc- tionecr can open his mouth Lawyer McDonough steps lightly forward, with smiling face and insinuating voiee, reminding ove of Bob Craig, as he was about to say one of hig prettiest things to the ladies, and aaid:— « “Gentlemen, I wish to announce in behalf of the owner, Mr. Parker, that the terms upon which the Jease of this theatre is made do not permit the under- letting of the premises. ”’ Here was a go. The play began backward. The climax was the first senten Botore Mr. McDonough epped aside a frowning individual, who kept his hat on, playing the heavy man, idles between a loco- ud a couple of denuded dummies and rolls out enveloped gracetul forms airy The pleasant drapery with ge had surrounded in the otwithstanding the announcement just made there is nothing in the ease to prevent the saie—tho contract will be ‘a good one,’ *’ and frowning at the dummies as if they had doubted bis word, the tragedian retires amid the {ntense excitement of the audience. Now appears Mr. A, Haller Grose, the —_reeeiver appointed by the Court, with triumph sparkling in bis eye, advancing with a letter in bis hand. ‘Glamis thou art, and Cawdor,’’ he did not say, but simply an- nounced in dutort tones, “Gentlemen, | will read the lease,” He did read the lease, and, giving it a whack, looked around, defying any to contradict it. Nobody did. Now two auctioneers step up, looking more like the Cheerybles than the rollicking, witty trader an ue wonld an- nouace the terms of the sale er would re- peat hia few last words, as if be were his echo. Oue commenced :— “ tlemen, we will now announce the terms of the sal ! Cash’? Echoes the other, ‘Terms of the sale, Cash “What will you bid for tho Jease?’’? Echo, bid for the lease, ”? Finally a modest voice from the stago pipes forth, “$3,000 1" A sudden quiet comes over the audi- ence, By single hundreds the bids croep up to $4,200, when Mortimer, with a lusty voice, sings out $4,500 Upon which a round of ap- plause, great as Booth ever got when ho electrified a house with ‘Is mthe King?” astounded Mortimor and the meek-eyed double-barrelled auctioneer, An- other hundred bid, and Mortimer, apparently encour- aged to become lavish by approbation, says with em- phasig, *$5,000!"” The house ecboes again and again, when another one hundred causes the ‘orite to ex- claim: give it up; what you know, you know; from this time forth I will not speak a word, ”* The bidding went on until $6,100 was reached. At this point in the play the excitement was considerabl over 100 degrees, and the silence ke what Winebell prophestes will come upon us when not a leat or a zephyr will stir, exeept the modest anxiety ot the dual auctioneer, who held their hands up tn supplication for more money and then dropped them, in one motions, in mild threatenings that it was pretty near time to ring down the curtain. This pantomime went on for fully two minutes, As the hands went up every. body looked reproucnfully at his neighbor, because did not move tho sum up; as they camo down eyes trembled and hoarts went up in mouths that were com- mencing to long for some: hing else there. THE PURCHASR. At Jast Henry W. Kanaga was prociaimed owner and received a double round of applause from an audience who bad no more interest in the purchase than Grant had in the Centennial celobration of the Fourth of July. With the exception of a kind of epil ‘on the gale of the traps of the stage, which were for $525, the play was over. The paternal aac! dismissed the audience with his blessing and it hurried out, lime and two WHISKEY AND DEATH. About two o'clock yosterday morning a quarrel oc- curred between two firemen on board the Enghsh eveamship Colomba, from Southampton, Captain Lever commanding, lying at pter No. 63 North River, which ended in death by drowning to one and severe injuries to the other. The combatants were James O'Conner and Henry McCarthy, both young men, and, up to the time of the quarrel, good friends, All hands on board worked toa late hour last night, unloading the sbip, At twelve o'clock work was suspended, and some of the men turned In, while others went on shore, In the Jawer party were O'Conner and McCarthy. They first entered a saloon on West street, near the pier, where they drank. A dispute arose between ©’Conner end McCarthy as to which of the two was the best man, They went into the stroet and began wrestling. Both grew angry as the struggle proceeded, McCarthy went to his vessel the others entering an- other saloon, A little before two o'clock O'Conner boarded the ship. MoCarthy, who wason deck, ch: Iengod himto fightand struck at him. Tke mon nd struggled, graunally nearing the edge, sudden move on the part of one threw both into the water. ©’Conner struck the pter and received a fracture of the head besides injuries to his body. Both men let go their held on touching the water. Several of their fellow seamen hastened to their av- sistance, After some littie delay occasioned by the darknoss of the night and the exhaustion of the men in the water, O'Conner was got on deck. McCarthy was drowned. Upto the present time the body bas not been recovered. nuel Nolan and Robert Chal- mers, seamen on the Colomba, witnessed the straggle, They were brought this morning to the Coroner's office and will be placed on the stand at the inquest, CHARITIES AND CORRECTION, The Commissioners of Charities and Correction yes- terday ordered the flags on the Charity Hospital to be put at haif-mast, in memory of Mr. Lockwood De Forest Woodruff, of No. 235 Madison avenue, who died Monday afternoon. Tno mysterious fire at Castle Garden, by which the care of emigrants ip this city is involved, continucs to oxcite the city authorities, the Commissioners of Emi- gration and jhe insurance companies, whose officials: are in doubt what course to pursue, in view of the fact that no satisfactory theory has yet been offered as to the origin of the fire, and that Fire Marshal George | W. Sheldon has not pushed an {investigation with the i vigor that the insurance anthorities think he should display. Various theories havo beep advanced as to the cause of the conflagration, including one that {t was the result of spontaneous combustion, owing to the great heat of Sunday; avother that the fire resulted from a spark from a passing steam vessei, and lastly that the destruction of the building was the work of an incendiary, All the insurance men seen yesterday express their astonishment that auy sane person should entertain either of the two first theories, and the president of one of the companies was strongly inclined to the belief that the fire was of incendiary origin. When asked what action the undere writers would take he detailed the instructions given to Mr. Driggs, of the Williamsburg City Iasaranco Company, who acts as the agent of all the companies interested, and stated that the losses would only be paid atter a full and exbaustive investigation, H cailed special attention to the following clauses of the contract between the underwriters and the insured :— ining lose or damaze, by fro shal ree E sald" tons to the, company, ane | 9 Persons st forthwith give as soon aft of such loss, whether any and what s ible, render a particular accouut as posal i pre signed and sworn to by them, other insurance. made on the same property, civing coples of portion of ail policies thereon, also the act the property and their Interest there for what purpose r containing the and by whom @ Bie ing be ed, Be. ae rt; ured, the several pat ereol, Bee Vime of the: loss, when and how the fre orixiuated, under the hand and seal S est to the piace of the fire, not conecened in tho loss as & creditor or otherwise. not related to the assured), stating that he has examined the Circumstances attending the loss, knows the character and circumstances of the assured’, und verily believes asstired has, without fraud, sustained loss on the pi y ‘amount which such magistrate or notary public all, if required, submit to an “! ouchers, and exhibit the same for exami- are company, and dari extracts and pies thereot tobe made; the assured shall aiso produce certilied copies of all wills and involces, the originals of which have been lost, and shall exhibit all that remains of the property which was covered by this policy, damaged or not dainaged, for examination to any person or persons named by the company, When persoual property is damaged, forthwith cause it to be put in order, asso rious articles according t the undamaged, an ‘and furnished ‘to. the company of the anntity, quality aud cost of cach article. The representatives of some of the companies: are very reserved in their utterances, and for the pres ent this is all that it is sale to say. DKPARTURE OF EMIGRANTS. ° A visit to the scene of the great fire demonstrated how eusily energetic officials can bring order out of ht hours everything wag Tunning smoothly and systematically. About 250 Men- nonites, who arrived via the City of Chester and were delayeu in their departure jor the West by their in- ability to get their dratts cashed, were late in the after- noon on the Erie Railway barge, awaiting removal to the train in Jersey City that last night started west. ward, Inthe Labor Bureau (which has been changed to the Landing Bureau), were about fifty emigrants whe had arrived by various Vessels, and were either await- ing transportation or an opportunity to il AFFIDAVITS 48 TO 1088 OF BAGGAGE. The Commissioners, to id frauds, have estab- lished a rule that each affidavit of loss shall be accom- panied by tbe check for each piec well as a sehedule detailing the various articles in each parcel, with the value thereof. The Clerk of the Executive Bureau, Notary Pubiic, and Mr, Connolly, Information Bureau, have been very active in preparing these ailidavits during the past two days, and have filed about thirty affidavits, covering claims of $5,038. The insurance on tbe baggage is 315,000; but none con- nected with the Garden scem to know how many pieces were destroyed. Superintendent Coonan wag yesterday asked for data as tothe number of pieces destroyed, but he stated that itis impossible to give figures, as the duplicate checks and the vooks were de- clerk, who has taken twenty- ae ae, claims of $3,500—expressed that while many emigrants were bonest in the beliet the statement of their losses and in the schedule attached to their affidavits, others had sworn to false statements with a view of making money out of the misiortunes of their associates and swindling the in- surance companies who have rieks on the beguace, ot wi | is sale to say that the msurance compauies who are 1n- | volved in these losses contest the claims inch by | inch, and only pay them when convinced that in law they'are responsible. There ts likely to be litigation of great interest to insurer and insured growing out of ‘this fire that may not be setiled for years. The insur. anco men have selected Mr. Driggs, of the Williams. burg Fire Insurance Company, as their agent, and they claim that he will search the bottom facts as to the fire, sustained, as he is, by Rabat company of the Underwriters’ Association inter THR GARDEN YESTERDAY, By order of Mr. Driggs, agent of the anderwriters, Superintendent Coonan yesterday employed twenty-five men and three carts to remove the débris of tne fire from the rotunda and other burned buil 80 as to enable the insurance surveyors to enter and assess the damage done. They were received at the Garden, and, such as were ready, were at once shipped to their destination in lowa, Wis- consin and Minnesota by the outgoin; ning trains, and the Commissioners are now a9 weil organized thai if to-day 9,000 passengers should suddenly arrive they could carefuily provide for them and prouptly despatch them to their destination.
